  • Question

  • Recently this has happened to me twice in the last month.

For some reason, randomly, it will ask me to reactivate windows Vista Ultimate (32bit) after I had already activated it (did it through the online process).

The thing is I can not even log into windows anymore and have only online access.  I do not know what the problem is, I have called Microsoft Support and Technical lines for the solution, but with no luck.  Plus I can not even activate it by phone because it doesn't give me any numbers, where 1, 2, etc are, it is just blank.

The first time it happened, i called MS and they said they could not do anything and most likely the key and software were fake (counterfeit).  But the key and software I got directly from Microsoft by joining in one of there programs, if we share information ,etc we will get a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and the product Key (OEM) version.  But when I reinstalled Vista, and activated it, it worked and activated. The product key and CD are not counterfeit as MS suggested (plus they said that I had to go buy a new Vista product key, etc. that was there only suggestion.)

So could anyone help me out, i have provided a Diagnostic Report below.

  • Hi FanaticalMoose,

No, your Product Key is Genuine and is a Retail (not OEM) key. The problem is that you need to Activate but (if I understand correctly) it sounds like when you attempt to Activate by Phone, no Installation ID is displayed (i.e. the big long number that you read off to the Activation Rep and then the Activation rep gives you a long responce number that will cause Vista to be Activated).

If I am correct that the issue is that the Installation ID is not displaying, then to fix the issue, you just need to re-enter your Product Key. To do that, follow the below steps:

    1) Click the option that opens a Internet Browser.

    2) A Internet Browser should come up, type: %windir%\system32\cmd.exe in the browser address bar

    3) A window with a black background will come up

    4) Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key

    5) Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer

    6) Click the Next button.

    7) You will be asked if want to Activate, click ok

    8) It will attempt to Activate by the internet and may return an "Invalid Key" or "Key already in use" error (this is ok, continue to step 9)

    9) Return to the window with the black background

    10) Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key

    11) Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button

    12) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone

NOTE: when you call that number, you will first hear an Automated Voice that will try to Activate Vista for you. If the Atomated Voice gives you an option to talk to a Live Activation Rep, select that option. If not, do not enter any numbers. This should force the Automated Voice to transfer you to a Live Activation Rep. Trying to Activate thru the Automated Voice will not work, in your case, only thru the Live Activation Rep will your Activation be successful.

Once completed, you may need to reboot twice. (Vista can take up to 2 reboots to fully reset back to a Genuine state)

  • When I open the window, internet explorer doesn't open, only firefox does.  So i can not do that, can i just open CMD.exe (found out how to open it with firefox)? and type in slui.exe 3? I will try that, but if that doesn't work, is there way use the way you used it with firefox 3?

  • okay so i tried the method that you mentioned with no luck.

When I type slui.exe 3, the only thing that happens is that the Activate Windows Now screen (the one i used to access the internet, 'Access your computer with reduced functionality') just gets brought to the front.  So when retype the product key it gives me this error - 0xc004f050, "The software licensing service reported that the product key is invalid"  And when i press okay and try to activate by phone, the long range of numbers still do not show up.

    for more information:

    CMD.exe reads like this

    C:\Windows\system32>

    Is that correct?

  • Hi FanaticalMoose,

Well, it sounds like you did it right, but I'm unsure why it gave you that "The software licensing service reported that the product key is invalid" error.

This issue is getting outside my area of knowledge and I am going to refer you to Vista support. (Note that Activation Issues are classified as an Install iss and Microsoft provides free support for Install issues). Call (800) 936-5800, the automated Voice will ask if you are a Developer with a development question, respond "No" and you will be transfered to a Live Person who should be able to assist you.
