  • Still no change :(

    The normal solution is to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker - but you say that you are unable to read the Key there.

    In such circumstances, the only things you can do are

    1) recreate the Licensing Store - in case it's a minor software problem causing the misread

    2) try updating the BIOS to the latest available Vista-compliant one, from the manufacturer's website

    3) Contact the manufacturer direct, and see if they can provide assistance to correct the SLIC table

    4) a reformat and reinstall using the manufacturer's recovery media

    5) purchase a new license for Windows (or a new computer)   

    In your case, #1, 2, 3 don't apply - which leaves you with #4 and #5...

    There *may* be an alternative solution though, if you are patient and persistent.

    Attempt Telephone Activation, and speak to an operator - they will tell you that your current Key is blocked (they should then ask for confirmation of your Product Key). Explain to them your problem, that you need to change the Key to the one on your sticker, but that the sticker is unreadable (could they please supply a replacement Key?). Hopefully they will ask for documentary proof of the sticker, in the form of an email with a picture of the affected sticker - and you can proceed from there.

     

    Sometimes it takes two or three calls before you get an operator who actually knows and uses this procedure - but I know that it can and does happen.

  • I ran chkdsk, no issue. Windows sticker is stupidly on bottom of laptop where it has naturally rubbed off and can't be read.

    I see a class action lawsuit in the making; I paid for this computer with Windows and I'll be dammed if I give microsoft more money when they obviously have a problem with their validation method.

    1. Try installing the follwing update and then then try activating:

    If that fails, try reinstalling the update: uninstall the update, restart the PC, instal the update, restart the PC and then check. Refer the link for more information:

    Look for the update 971033 and remove the same.

    2 .Try activating Windows offline, if the aboe method fails:

    Goto start -> type slui -4 -> press Enter. Choose your country/region, click Next, call to any of the numbers, enter the request code. Then, enter the activation code, to activate Windows.

    3. If that fails, try this:

    Goto start -> type services.msc -> press Enter. Click Yes, if UAC prompts. Now, look for the service "Software Protection". Double click on it, change startup type to Automatic, click on Apply and then Ok. Restart the PC, and then try activating.

  • The problem appears to be that youve' reinstalled using Retail Media - rather than the manufacturer's Recovery media. Retail media require that you use the Product Key from the COA sticker on the machine's case, rather than one found using a Keyfinder tool - which is usually the manufacturer's OEM_SLP Key as shown in your report above.

     You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment),  using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

    You may need to activate by phone.

  • I have not reinstalled anything; it just started up that way.
    Problem is the windows label is on the bottom of the laptop and I can't read it because it gets rubbed off over time; what a stupid place to put it.

    I have the office activation that came with the computer but a separate windows one was not supplied.
    This is not my error but a microsoft/dell issue in how they do activation.

    I will not submit to extortion.

  • Let's see if there's an underlying software problem first.

    Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

    Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

    Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

    Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

     CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

    You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at the next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

    The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size  of the drive, so be patient!

     After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally  (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

    SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

    Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

    Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

    Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

    Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

    Upload the CBS.log file (compressed, please!) to your OneDrive or DropBox Public folder, and post a link - also post a new MGADiag report.

  • Note also that the time was incorrect. I turned off automatic daylight savings and it is now correct.
    It still says windows not genuine but obviously Microsoft have a pretty serious flaw in their validation process.

  • You had 63 damaged files present that SFC managed to fix!

    It found none that it couldn't fix.

    You need to switch the time in the correct way, because if you should be in Summer time currently, then it will report the wrong time to internet servers in winnter and you may lose access to certain sites. First, set the Daylight time to 'automatic' and THEN adjust the time to the correct one - also check your region and Time Zone settings settings are correct.

    Please post a new MGADiag report once you have the correct time settings.

  • Still no change :(

    The normal solution is to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker - but you say that you are unable to read the Key there.

    In such circumstances, the only things you can do are

    1) recreate the Licensing Store - in case it's a minor software problem causing the misread

    2) try updating the BIOS to the latest available Vista-compliant one, from the manufacturer's website

    3) Contact the manufacturer direct, and see if they can provide assistance to correct the SLIC table

    4) a reformat and reinstall using the manufacturer's recovery media

    5) purchase a new license for Windows (or a new computer)   

    In your case, #1, 2, 3 don't apply - which leaves you with #4 and #5...

    There *may* be an alternative solution though, if you are patient and persistent.

    Attempt Telephone Activation, and speak to an operator - they will tell you that your current Key is blocked (they should then ask for confirmation of your Product Key). Explain to them your problem, that you need to change the Key to the one on your sticker, but that the sticker is unreadable (could they please supply a replacement Key?). Hopefully they will ask for documentary proof of the sticker, in the form of an email with a picture of the affected sticker - and you can proceed from there.

     

    Sometimes it takes two or three calls before you get an operator who actually knows and uses this procedure - but I know that it can and does happen.

  • Thanks for your help; there's no way I'm giving Microsoft money and dell  no longer provide recovery media.

    Out of warranty you have  to use their premium service.

    I tried the win recover disk I made but there are no restore points before this started happening.

    I'll just forgo updates from now on. I did the "SLMGR/REARM" trick to stop  the notifications.
