Incorrect Disk Space Reported - Getting Gibberish Instead of Numbers (See Screenshot) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Recently, I noticed something weird with the amount of disk space being reported by the primary DATA drive. I have a old MediSmart server that I have been using for quite a while now. Recently, the primary DATA drive is reporting funky statistics. As you can see from the screen shot below, INSIDE OF WINDOWS it's reporting the (1) Capacity of JUST the drive (2) The free space of the TOTAL POOL of drives. (3) And it can't figure out the used space.

If you're a Windows Home Server owner, please help me out. Login to your WHS remotely and look at your primary DATA drive in My Computer... Right Click > Properties.

    1. Does it show the TOTAL CAPACITY of the POOL? or the TOTAL CAPACITY of just the drive?

My unit is currently showing the total capacity of just the drive.

    2. Also, does it show the FREE/USED SPACE of the POOL of drives? or the FREE/USED SPACE of just the drive?

My unit is showing the total free space of the pool and is having difficulty showing the total used space. (See screenshot below.)

I tried restarting the server. That didn't help. I thought about adding/removing drives to see if this statistic would automatically reset, but I unfortunately added too much data to the pool to do that.

Is there a way for force Windows to recalculate the disk usage statistics? Again, in the server console these statistics are reported fine. Only in Windows does it issue occur: specifically the drive properties window and the dive management mmc window.

(IN THE SCREENSHOT: Top left - Windows drive management mmc; Bottom left - Server console addin; Right - Windows drive properties)

First, logging into the server desktop is unsupported.  Second, this is normal behavior.  It's due to how Drive Extender handles files in the background by pooling drives together and allowing Vista and 7 to copy files to the server by seeing the entire storage pool (instead of just the primary drive).  Just ignore it.  :)

  • I had a fourth disk (500GB) that was not part of the disk pool. I wondered if adding the fourth disk would force windows to "recalculate" the disk statistics. Here's what I see AFTER I added the disk:

    1. Notice the free disk space for this disk (aka. the free disk space for the pool) INCREASED. - COOL

    2. The disk capacity STILL IS STUCK SHOWING the disk capacity for just the primary data disk. - NOT COOL

    3. The used disk space still is displaying gibberish. - NOT COOL

Please help me out! Remote desktop into your WHS and take a look at the properties window for your primary data disk (D) and post your results. If everyone has the same problem, I wouldn't be so concerned. If I'm the only one with this weird problem, I'm going to consider doing a major backup and reinstalling the OS.

Then you have a different problem.  Please start a new thread and post as many details about your problem as possible (and you should include your component numbers, which can be found by opening the Console > Settings button > Resources tab).

  • This is an annoying problem, and "Just ignore it" isnt really a sufficient answer. We have paid good money to purchase this product, and even after 3 power packs, it is still reporting inconsistant storage space. Terrible !!!

To be honest, I doubt that Microsoft is going to fix it. It's a cosmetic issue in a tool that (because using the server desktop is unsupported in the first place) you should never see.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

That's not true, it also shows up on Windows 7clients using shared drives from the WHS, they all show up as red and full when there is actually plenty of space elsewhere in the pool, so I see it every time I open My Computer, and I am not going onto the server desktop.  I agree with thcnunz that this should have been fixed 2 power packs ago!
