Windows XP Problem RRS feed

  • "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>/system32.hal.dll

    Please reinstall a copy of the file above." 

    This started when we changed displays for our CPU. Its a pretty old CPU but its worked fine until we changed our display. We dont have a copy of Windows XP...were thinking we lost it but we do have  a copy of Windows 98. Could we install Windows 98 instead of Windows XP to get our computer running again? Should I buy a new Windows XP program?
