There’s not a lot we can do here, except confirm your  diagnosis – which I do.

Your Windows Key is from a not-for-resale MSDN account.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key.(all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window. or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)
(note that you cannot both claim a refund, and apply for a Get Genuine kit)

Please read the following stickies.... ........................

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

  • The packaging provide is identical to the original packaging, the secure seal on the package is identical to the original one, the DVD inside are the genuine one, the only problem is the key provided.

It is not like copying / downloading the product from an unauthorised site.

They must had/got some inside help in selling this products on the market.

I am awaiting now to get a Genuine Kit.

I read most of the topics last night when found out that I was having the blocked key. I couldn't believe it.

    Thank you anyway.

  • You don't understand.  The entire packaging, seal, and dvd are counterfeit.  Please see the YouTube video that Noel linked in his reply.  The counterfeits are produced on very modern equipment in China.  MSDN product keys are not distributed to MSDN subscribers in a boxed copy of Windows.  The subscriber downloads them from his MSDN downloads page.  There is no way an MSDN product key can be printed on the label inside a genuine package.  There are tens of thousands of these counterfeit packages being sold on eBay, the Amazon Marketplace, and discount websites all over the world.

Some of the counterfeits are actually ‘grey market’ products – the only thing non–genuine about them is the COA sticker or POL sticker and the fancy label stuck to the cover.
They may even be produced in the same production line as the genuine ones – but are not on the official books.
Some are made in high-value facilities producing large volumes of disks (in the 10’s of thousands a month) – and these are probably the major problem, since they are high-quality fakes.

Some are low-volume jobs, where a shipment of legitimate disks goes missing for a while – and the stickers are abstracted and replaced. The genuine ones are them sold with counterfeit disks (or over the internet with no disks), and may be sold a number of times.

We see a large number of MSDN fakes here – relative to other kinds, that is – because the purchaser believes that they have a genuine copy (someone who already knows they bought a fake doesn’t usually come here to find that out), and wants it fixed. Unfortunately there’s nothing we can do for them except point them in the right directions.
For those with good enough fakes, some countries offer a complimentary replacement service (after testing) – others insist that the user purchase a legitimate license.
(I’ll stop here, as I tend to ramble!)

  • Unfortunately, most of the software offered on auction web sites, such as eBay, is either pirated or counterfeit.

  • I understand the point, even if its hard to see the difference with a naked eye.

The youtube link is not working.

I am awaiting the result of the Countefeit report on Microsoft hoping on an offer of genuine product instead.

The item was purchased about 2 years ago on the eBay and the seller hasn't any action on eBay since late October 2010 and is not responding to any emails. I only opened and installed the product 2 weeks ago or so.

This is working.  Noel's link is missing the final character.

You do not have to reinstall if you purchase a legit copy of Ultimate.  You can just use the product key at the Change Product Key link on the System Properties page.  If you purchase from the Microsoft Store you can download the product key immediately.  You will want to also download the .iso files and burn both to dvd.  The current images are updated for Service Pack 1.

Having said that, I would not buy Ultimate.  The only difference between Ultimate and Professional is Bitlocker and multilanguage support.  On the other hand, Professional will receive five years more Microsoft support than Ultimate since Ultimate is classified as a consumer edition and Professional is a business edition.

The Get Genuine kit only provides a non-transferrable license, exactly like OEM copies, so consider all these factors before you decide what to do.

  • I had already installed the Ultimate on my new unit, and had made all the updates including SP1, and then installed some software for video editing.

I will have to consider your suggestion to install Professional instead of Ultimate, even this may require to fresh install everything again.

I managed to watch the video. its great but it came to late for me, as now.

Thanks anyway for the support and advice.

  • I have a last question:

I will have to send in the purchased software (as above) to Microsoft in Ireland for exchange. Will I get a genuine product + key on return or I will loose both money and purchased software?

There is no guarantee as far I could read on Microsoft available online. I have worries in this matter. Plus that it may take anything from 4-6 weeks to get a reply but no promises.

    Thank you.

  • The software is not copy protected so feel free to duplicate it.  For what it's worth, it has no monetary value anyway since it is counterfeit.  What you will get back will probably be a Get Genuine kit which will include a product key and software to "clean up" your present installation.  It will probably not be a replacement retail package.  If Microsoft did that we could all buy or download counterfeit Windows and then trade it in, thus saving big bucks but costing Microsoft lost sales.  I believe that the product key will have the same limitations as an OEM one.  Microsoft will get you up and running with genuine Windows but it will not be what you set out to buy two years ago.  But then again, maybe you will get lucky.

There is no guarantee that the software will be replaced.
It needs to pass certain quality bars before MS will part with a legitimate copy, and it will NOT be returned under any circumstances.

If you’re not prepared for that, you should attempt to claim a refund from the vendor – if they are still responding to attempts to contact them.

  • Thanks for reply.

I purchase the product on assurances that it is a genuine one. If I was unsure I would not chose that route. The vendor is not in business and does not reply to email. Probably he is already under investigation, as he did offer dozens of Microsoft software package online - eBay.

I don't have the actual delivery invoice showing the vendor address (probably shredded and recycled), but have the eBay correspondence from the date of purchase, including the PayPal transaction receipt, and correspondence send/received from vendor via eBay.

I will have to take my chances and send the software pack including all documents and wait on a decision from Microsoft.
