Windows Home Server 2011 won't recognise Windows 8 client computer when trying to connect remotely RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Windows Home Server 2011 on a small server in my office and I have always been able to connect to my client computers via the server by logging into the remote login connection.

I recently upgraded some of my client computers from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and now I cannot connect remotely from my home to the Windows 8 computers.  I can still connect to the Windows 7 computer, but it keeps crashing so I am extremely frustrated that the remote login doesn't recognise the Windows 8 software.

I do not want to upgrade to the expensive Windows Server 2012 so does anyone know how I can solve this problem, without re-installing Windows 7 on all of my computers?

I am not very technically minded, so please can you explain in layman's language?

    Thank you

    Amanda

  • What do you mean won't recognize computer when trying to connect remotely?

Are you using Windows 8 Pro?  Windows 8 is equivalent to home edition so no Remote Desktop.  If you are using Pro have you enabled Remote Desktop, it is disabled by default?  (press the key combination [Win-Logo]+[R], then simply enter the command: sysdm.cpl ,5 )

  • Hi,

It's not the Pro version, so you are saying that it doesn't have Remote Desktop? God I hate the way Microsoft keep messing with their software.  If I wasn't already so hooked into Microsoft products, I'd look at changing to something more stable and reliable.  Drives me nuts.

  • I think the fact that you have chosen to downgrade from the Pro or Ultimate version of W7 which have remote desktop capability, to the non- Pro version of W8 (which does not) can really be describes as "Microsoft keep messing with their software". Moving to Windows Server 2012 would not help your situation but moving to W8 Pro would.

  • The non-Pro version of Windows has never supported being a server for remote desktop. The same was true for Windows 7 Home Premium. Windows Home Server cannot magically upgrade your Windows clients to have some capability they don't support.
