Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) RRS feed

  • Question

  • What did you do Microsoft?!

I cannot download this update from WindowsUpdate. It shows that the update is all ready downloaded, (Where is IT?!) and ready to install. I have Windows XP SP2, AVG Free Edition, no Firewall, and Internet Explorer 7 beta 2. When WindowsUpdate runs, I get the wonderfully helpful error message:

    Installation Failure

    Error Code: 0x80242006
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following resources.

    For self-help options:

    For assisted support options:

I can't find any help for this. And I've tried the suggestion of installing the update again. Never works. The only thing that I can think of is that I have the MS Anti-Spyware disabled in MSINFO. And I'm about to uninstall that.

  • Wallace,

Step 1 is to download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a response message in this thread.

Step 2 is to look on the computer to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticty (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  Click here:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

  • Those are two options to either 1 - manually restart the Windows Update Process or 2 - manually install the specific update :).

  • Phil,

I beg your pardon ahead of time, I am so confused following the progress and frustration with regard to successfully getting the WGA Notification KB905474 to download/install correctly. I read this instruction here

    Start \ Run

    Type cmd then click OK

In the command prompt type the following command : Net stop wuauserv      (Press Enter)

In windows navigate to C:\Windows and Delete Softwaredistribution   Also delete the same folder in C:\Windows\System32

In command Prompt type the following :

Net start wuauserv     (Press Enter to Start Windows update services)

    Try Windows Update

as well as another you posted  saying to do this

    http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/windowsxp-kb905474-enu-x86_4bafa8793e8cdcaf4ba4ffc494df32d496154544.exe

Are these 2 options? Do you suppose Microsoft will give us a new download via Microsoft Auto Update, or should I have to do something now?

Not only was I unsuccessful installing KB905474  today, I also could not click on the descriptive icons in the update History by turning off  popup control. I in WGA limbo. Thanks. MM

  • Those are two options to either 1 - manually restart the Windows Update Process or 2 - manually install the specific update :).

Everything is back to normal now. Whew. I feel safer knowing that I'm able to get my updates like I used to.

  • When I tried to install the update Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)  I also got the following error ....

    Error Code: 0x80242006

Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following resources.

After trying it 5 times I finally decided to search on this forum.  Thanks for the info ...

I tried deleting "Softwaredistribution" files but the update still failed.

Manually installing the update from the link you provided ( http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/windowsxp-kb905474-enu-x86_4bafa8793e8cdcaf4ba4ffc494df32d496154544.exe )

    fixed the problem.

However, I hope that I don't have to install every update like this going forward.

    Thanks for the help.

  • Hello Speedy,

Let’s split your thread off so we may focus more attention on your particular situation.  Splitting threads are done to mitigate confusion caused by more than one posting about similar   topics allowing us to focus on each customer individually.  Please post your question here http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=442&SiteID=25 in a new thread of your own.

In order to receive the best support, we request all users to initially run the Genuine Diagnostics tool.  The tool will try and identify the individual issue you may be experiencing.  Also, please provide a brief synopsis describing the issue including any error messages or codes. These can be found in the lower left hand corner of most Genuine Advantage Web pages when an error is encountered.

Please download and run the MS Genuine Diagnostic Tool utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is telling us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?

    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.

    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thank you,
