Product Key already in use? RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I try and activate I get told that the product key is already in use. I have tried changing the product key (and yes I clicked next) and I've tried doing it in command prompt.

Let me just explain I downloaded a version of Vista from MSDNAA the first day it came out. The copy I downloaded would only install as Ultimate and would not let me enter my product key during installation nor would it let me chose the installation I wanted. I downloaded again and this time the copy worked and let me install business.

Now it's saying my key isnt valid! No one else has used this key, it has not left my desk!

  • Hi Kurmey,

Most times when people get the "product key in use" message it means they clicked "Activate Windows online now" instead of clicking "Next" or pressing Enter on that screen.  You can bypass having to make that distinction by going through the "Change product key" link at the bottom of the System Properties window (in the Windows activation section).  If that doesn't work, please try phone activation.  You can get that started by entering "slui 4" in a command prompt.

Let me know if that works!  Thanks!

  • From what I can see you're genuine (that is, you passed validation) and you're activated (so your key seems to be fine).  Are you trying to reactivate?  Can you tell me more about what you're experiencing?

    Thanks!

    Saturday, February 17, 2007 1:46 AM
  • Well it keeps trying to activate and when it does it says the key I typed in is already in use. I've done all the steps to change the key.

I havent been able to activate before, the first installation I used kept saying the key was not for this version (it would only install Ultimate) so now Im using business and its just saying the key is in use already.

    Saturday, February 17, 2007 2:50 PM
  • So that I'm clear...

You entered your key through the "Change product key" dialogue that you can access through System Properties, and you tried using "slmgr -ipk <your product key>" in command prompt and you're still getting a message that says "The activation service determined the specific product key is in use."?  (Is the error code 0xC004C003?)

    Is that correct?  Thanks!

    Wednesday, February 21, 2007 12:37 AM
  • when I use command prompt I get the error message:

"Run 'slui.exe 0x2a 0xC004f050' to display the error text.

     Error: 0xC004f050"

    Thursday, February 22, 2007 12:27 PM
  • 0xC004f050 "typically" occurs when you try to install a Product Key that is intended for an edition of Vista other than the one installed.  Could you double check that they match?  More specifically, since you've installed Business, double-check that your key is a Business key.  Are you in Europe by any chance?

    Thanks!

    Friday, February 23, 2007 3:52 AM
  • During the installation I typed it in and Windows determined it was a Business key (which I was told it was by the MSDNAA Site).

Yes I am in Europe, England to be specific, why do you ask?

    Friday, February 23, 2007 12:44 PM
  • I apologize that I haven't been able to give you a clear resolution thus far.  Your issue is somewhat confusing.  I read a post you made earlier about running a Silicon Images RAID.  Am I right in assuming that you've updated to the beta drivers posted here: http://forums.microsoft.com/genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1170769&SiteID=25 ?  At this moment you seem to be activated from what I can see.  Is it possible that this driver is forcing you to have to reactivate every three days as mentioned in the above post?  Could you try reinstalling the beta drivers?

Once you try that and reactivate, please check your System Properties window and let me know if you're activated according to that.  Also, after that, if you could revalidate here: www.microsoft.com/genuine and repost your WGA diag info (you can run the tool here: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012).

The reason I ask if you're in Europe is because there was a German forum user who reported he had received a Business key but was told to install Business N.  Could that be part of the issue?

    Thanks for your patience.

  • I am having a very similar issue.  I built a new computer all Vista ready, but lost a hard drive within days (smoke was literally coming out of it).  The hard drive was replaced, Windows was re-loaded, and now it says that the "the product key you typed is already in use" and I cannot register.  I have verified that my version of Windows is genuine, and my product key has not left my office...no-one knows it but me (I am the only one who has even seen it since I opened the box Vista came in).  Any suggestions?  I have no idea how to make actual contact with Microsoft, so hopefully someone in this forum can share a similar experience that ended in success.

  • Hi guys,

I'm having a similar issue as well, when i installed Vista Home Premium , i told it to automatically activate and everything went smoohtly and it activated. Now windows tries to ask me to activate it yet again. And when i do so it says my product key is already in use. I downloaded the tool mentioned earlier and here's the info i got. Something seems really wrong as it says validation control is not installed..... what the hell?

I have contacted the support line and the women was useless, she gave me the wrong number for the activation service and when i did get through to them i could only activate by phone, which obviously won't work as it's the error i am getting. Please someon explain what's going on, my computer is vital for my job and i need to ensure it doesn't suddenly stop working.

  • Hello SmokersCough,

That does sound strange.  Can you tell me if you've changed any hardware or updated drivers at all since you activated?  Are you running a RAID?

To resolve I'd recommend the following steps:

    1) Would you try phone activating?  From the info above I don't think there's reason to think it should fail.  You can get to the phone activation dialogue by opening a Command Prompt, typing slui 4, and pressing Enter.

    2) Once you've successfully activated, click "Validate Windows" on this page: www.microsoft.com/genuine

    3) Reboot.

If that doesn't help, please rerun the diag tool and post the info.  Also please tell me what error code you see on the failure page if validation fails.  The code will be gray and in brackets at the end of the message on that page.  Thank you!

  • Thanks for the response.  I tried this a couple of times and it did not work.  The activation process still told me that my key was already in use.  I tried a suggestion posted to someone else and activated by phone, and this appeared to work.  I'm not sure what the issue was, but as long as the activation window doesn't come back I am happy.  Thanks.

  • Hi

I have a similar problem, but different I guess because of a hardware issue.

Two weeks ago I returned a faulty ASUS motherboard M2N32-SLI Deluxe to my supplier ebuyer.com and they agreed it was faulty and sent me a new one.  Eversince installing it my 100% genuine Vista Business OS has displayed this message.

When the Product Key was initially entered several months ago it was authorised, but now I am getting terrible warnings.

Can the problem relate to my new / replacement motherboard?  If so what should I do?

    Regards

    Max
