Help needed. Is it possible to get files back if they are deleted by accident in mesh? RRS feed

  • Question

  • As the title,
I changed the folder of my document of one of my computer with some mesh folders in it.
When windows moved my files, live mesh did not change the sync folder settings automatically(it is really my bad....) and many of my files in those folders are deleted either on this computer and live desktop together with my other computers who are also syncing the folder.
I do not have a copy of those files...said....

  • Not really - unfortunately if the files were fully deleted from your mesh (including your Live Desktop) then they are most likely gone. Some things you can try / check:

    1. you said that you just moved the files which caused the deletion - are they no longer in the directory you moved the files to?
    2. Check under your Live Mesh folder (c:\documents and settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Live Mesh\GacBase\HoldingArea) for possible file remenants
    3. Check that none of the other machines that sync to the folder still have the files

    Good Luck...

  • Hi, thanks for the reply. I finally tried some free undelete software and get basically all of my file back(lost 8 out of 600) .
Before this, I was feeling good with my files on mesh 'cause I simply think that I automatically have several copies of them around most of my computers. Now I realize how stupid I was.
Now, I would keep all of my file on mesh at least another backup to make sure nothing horrible will happen again.

    Anyway, thanks for reply.

  • Have you checked your recycle bin (Windows) or trash (Mac)?  When something is removed from a Mesh folder it is usually placed there.

  • Since Live Mesh is actually a Tech preview and not even a "beta" yet (although the difference is subtle) it is a really good idea to have your Mesh data backed up elsewhere. I keep a few folder in sync with Live Mesh on multiple machines, but also maintain backups of those folders so I can recover in the event of a glitch - which has happened.

  • As far as I know Live Mesh entered Beta status on October 30, 2008.
But in general it's always a good idea to back up your data regularly - regardless of tech preview, beta, or released version, and not limited to data in your Mesh.
