Problems Activating Windows Vista Ultimate RRS feed

  • Question

  • Folks,

I'm experiencing problems activating my copy of Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit). The activation process is reporting that my Product Key is already in use. The original error code was 0xC004C003, but this has now changed to 0xC004C008. I've worked through a lot of the solutions in this forum, but none seem to work for me, i.e.:

    (a) using slmgr -ipk <key> followed by slmgr -ato at the command line

    (b) using the Change Product Key option via the Welcome Center (using the Next button and not the Acitivate Windows now link)

I've also tried activating over the phone but it no longer validates the key. Any ideas?

  • I have just repeated the phone activation as requested - it required me to go through and speak with a support engineer - who was very helpful, walked me through the process and gave me the necessary code in order to activate my copy of Windows Vista Ultimate - success at last! It was worth pointing out though, that one portion of the automated call was leading to my problem when attempting to activate earlier via the phone. Not sure what whether the user experience on the activation phone line is largely universal across the globe, but in the UK the process goes a little like this:

    1. You're prompted to press 1 if you want to Activate a Microsoft Product, or 2 to Activate Windows Terminal Server etc.

    2. I press 1.

    3. Then I'm prompted to enter the installation key which is displayed on my screen - everything is going smoothly so far.

    4. Enter the entire key - and then I'm told to wait (up to 10 seconds) until the key is checked.

    5. A few seconds later, another recorded voice states that it needs to ask me a few additional questions.

    6. It asks if my copy of Windows XP (not sure if it meant Vista here - or this is a generic process for both XP and Vista) was pre-installed (i.e. OEM) or a Retail purchase.

    7. I press 2 for Retail Purchase - I bought it from Amazon online.

    8. Next is the tricky bit - it then asks how many machines Windows XP is installed on (again, I think it means Vista here).

    9. My instinctive response (without waiting for the options) is to press 1 - because I'm only installing on one computer - fine right? I mean, if you were installing on 3 computers you would type 3 right?

    10. Wrong! As it turns out, I was a good little boy this time around and let the messages play in full - it tells me that the options are: 1 if installed on MORE THAN one computer and 2 if installed on ONLY one computer - completely counter-intuitive - which was why on my previous attempts to activate via phone the recorded message snapily told me that I can't install one more than one computer and here endeth the lesson.

Don't get me wrong, I probably should have waited to listen to the options fully - but I think I'm probably not the only one who will instinctively press 1 at this point, only to be shown the door.....

I'm obviously pleased that I've now been able to activate successfully, but its frustrating that it didn't work online.

Thank you for getting back to me on this issue - much appreciated.

    Regards,

    Shane

  • I've subsequently validated my copy of Vista Ultimate at www.microsoft.com/genuine however, activation still fails *sigh!*:

  • Would you try phone activating?  You can get started by typing "slui 4" in a command prompt and pressing Enter.  Then follow the prompts.  Let me know if that works.  Thanks!
