Win 7 "not genuine" message RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been running the PC which I built for over a year, and now today I am seeing the "not genuine" message in the lower right hand corner. This is ridiculous to me because I have a licensed copy, and have the COA attached unfortunately the microsoft rep to whom I spoke says I am out of luck. The product key says its pirated. I am quite angry with Microsoft and am wondering what would stop them from doing this again if I spend $$$ to buy another copy? So for now I am angry and out $170 for the first copy.

  • Windows Product ID: 00426-068-0901765-86110

The product ID -068- Indicates a not for resale MSDN account. If you are not the account holder and you purchased this in a retail box, the box and it's contents are counterfeit. Demand an immediate refund from the seller

    For more information see this:

To see how good these counterfeits are becoming, see:

You will have to purchase a legitimate windows from a legitimate retailer.

  • Wow! so this retai box w\ COA, booklets, and product key is counterfeited? That is astounding. I have software from school and the organization where I work that is MSDN, but this was retail. I will go after the seller. Thank you. Oh, and there is no way this could be mistaking it for my Office 2010 copy which is MSDN through my company?

  • Not a chance - the ID's are different for one thing, and the MGADiag can't even see Office 2010 for another :)

  • Well, I believe you as a tech expert and ok I know I have made a mistake buying software through ebay. I did a rollback on my PC and now it is good. But from what I learned here--it will not last. I am a good person and I always pay for what I own. I obviously made a mistake here and from what I have learned--will never make that mistake again. Thank you Noel & George for you your knowledge and insight. I truly do appreciate it.
