  • Do a search in the forums, the question of running game servers on your Windows Home Server PC has come up before.

You can probably install the required tools. If they can be set up to run as a service, then you can have them running 24x7. If they have to be run by a user logged in to the computer, then it's going to be a lot more difficult, because you don't want to leave a user logged in to your server all the time.

  • I run a game server on my WHS box without running it as a service, I use a .bat file to start the server at boot and restart it if the game server crashes.

  • I run a Garrys Mod 10 server. (same core as CS). Work without issues. You can run as a bat as mentioned or set it as a service via firedaemon.

  • Sweet! I was looking for an answer to this!

So by running it as a .bat would that make all server programs for any given game work or only some?
My only other question is, becuase im thinking of getting the HP X470 (linky here) will a game server run well on this machine? and does ANYONE know if i can upgrade the RAM on this too?

Games im thinking of running are:
    Source games i.e CS:S, GMOD
    Crysis Wars
    Call of Duty 4
    Battlefield series

  • I hate to bump this fairly old topic but Ive done a lot of searching in this forum and the Internet in general and cant find anything on how to install a dedicated game server on WHS. If anyone can provide me with some links or information i would be very grateful.

  • You can either set it up to run as a service, or your can run it using a scheduled task which is run on startup. You should consult the documentation for your game server for more information and (possibly) guidance on which will be better for your particular requirements.

In any case, running game servers on your Windows Home Server computer isn't supported by Microsoft. It will normally work, but if not you're pretty much on your own.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
