WHS tries to boot from wrong harddrive RRS feed

  • Question

  • I run WHS with 4 hot swappable harddrives. One of them obviously runs the WHS OS (the old one, not Vail). Seemingly at random, WHS tries to startup from the wrong harddrive.

Usually when I power on, I see the usual "DOS" screens where WHS tries to detect the harddrives. Usually the leds on all 4 disks blink one after another, and then I see the graphical startup screens of Windows. All goes well in that case. Every now and then however, after the 3rd drive led blinked, it keeps lightened up, showing that WHS tries to find the OS on this drive. Screen remains black, no matter how long I wait.

When this happens, it happens every next time I startup. After a longer period, chances are everything is fine again. Or (don't laugh) when I give the machine a whack on its case.

    Any help would be appreciated.

However, since I am not too much into master/slave, nor am I a boot guru, chances are you are best telling me to find an expert to repair this. Unless the solution is simple, Your suggestions would at least help me however to lead these experts in the right directions!

  • Where the sytem boots from is defined in the BIOS not WHS. Given that it works sometimes, it must be set up correctly (check anyway) so it may be a hardware problem. Start by checking the hard disk power and data cables at both ends to see if they are seated correctly - could explain why whacking the case helps!
