Restore using Onecare

Question
-
I editted the ownership permissions of my Onecare backup folder when my harddrive crashed and now that I have put a new OS on it Onecare acts like it cannot see it at all.
How do I work around that to get my files restored?Tuesday, January 6, 2009 4:46 PM

If you can see the backup data set and One Care cannot, and One Care can see the other backups I think support is the way to go.

As for editing the permissions of the backup folder, that should not have any effect on OneCare's ability to see it - particularly if you edited it to take ownership. Are the other backups that you see located in the same folder on the drive as the one you cannot see? What was the backup location before - external disk, single PC; external disk centralized backup; network attached storage/network share? And is the backup drive connected to the PC in the same manner?
You may want to try configuring backup to point to that location, running a small backup from the restored PC's OneCare (use a file type that doesn't reult in much data being written) and then trying the restore process once again.-steve

It seems as though the security settings created by OneCare were not valid following the OS re-install. When I went through and manually set myself as owner of EVERY file in the "Windows OneCare Backup" folder, it worked.

Hello unilaw, when restoring the files try selecting "Restore files from another computer". You can also try taking ownership of the folder using the new OS if you haven't alrady done this. Another option would be to use a zip utility to unzip the backups to a folder then drag and drop the files to the location you want or you could contact support for assistance. Bingo! This is exactly my situation. I manually edited the security settings in order to take ownership and now OneCare does not detect the backup set. I have another backup at the same path and it does see that. What's the resolution?

Thanks for adding to the thread, stweaver321. It would seem that the permissions situation could have been handled better by OneCare. Since the files were created by and owned by OneCare before the permissions were edited, and then the OS was reinstalled, the OS and the reinstalled OneCare would be out of sync regarding ownership until you reset the permissions after the reinstall.
