Project 2010 connection to Project Server 2010 Step by step guide

Question

Hello everyone,
I am trying to get a tutorial or step by step instructions on how to connect MS Project 2010 to MS Project Server 2010.
I have installed Server 2008 R2 (64 bit), Sharepoint 2010, and Project 2010 on my server and created a new site using the project 2010 template.
I am now trying to connect my stand alone Project 2010 to that site for updates and such.
I tried the File->Info->Manage accounts option and it comes up with "Could not retrieve server initialization data."
I cannot find a step by step tutorial to set it up or to trouble shoot the error message.
Any hints or good resources would be much appreciated.

I have tried those steps.
First off what is the URL that you suppose to be using?
Would it be more correct to say it is http:\\<servername>\<Sitename>
Documentation implies that it should be http:\\<servername>\<servername>
Which makes no sense.
Tweaking the URL give me this next error message.
"No permissions to read Project Server Global file. The Project Server Enterprise Global could not be accessed."
Not sure what is right URL or the right permission set for the user that needs project server access from project 2010.
That is what they left out from that guide.
Basically, if you are going to be connecting to Project server from project here are some prerequisites and permissions you need and in addition here is the url you need to access.

1) Usually the URL is something like http://servername/pwa (although it canvary depending on how the system was set up).2) From a security standpoint, generally I would make sure all users accessingProject Server through Project Professional would be in the Project ManagersGroup. Check the Project Managers group for specific permissions, but itshould be something like "Login to PWA," "Connect with Project Professional,"etc.3) Then you need to configure the server to support opening of specific projects. The default out of the box settings may work for you, but if you need toget more complex than that, you'll probably need a crash course in ProjectServer security configuration. My recommendation is to see how far you can get on your own with the onlinematerials available from Microsoft and this newsgroup. Consider purchasingone of the books out now for Admin of Project Server - of which I think there'retwo that I am aware of currently. Once you get the book, walk through itwhile sitting in front of a sandbox environment. Also consider enrolling in an offering of Project Server 2010 training, nowbeing offered both virtually and in person - or perhaps engaging a localMSFT partner for a mentoring sesion.- Andrew LavinskyBlog: http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/epm> I have tried those steps.>> First off what is the URL that you suppose to be using?>> Would it be more correct to say it is http:\\<servername>\<Sitename>>> Documentation implies that it should be> http:\\<servername>\<servername>>> Which makes no sense.>> Tweaking the URL give me this next error message.>> "No permissions to read Project Server Global file. I came looking for the same info myself. I set it up and can access it fine from Project 2010 client. I want my other project managers to be able to access everything project related as well, but they cannot connect from Project 2010. I am using all RTM bits. They all get the same 'could not retrieve server initialization data' message.
I have looked at my permissions and tried to duplicate them for the other users, adding them to all the same groups. I have even tried granting a specific user full access control over the /PWA root site and she still gets the same message. I am restarting the project client after each attempt per the documentation. I've been working with MS products since Win 3.0 and I've never had to work with Sharepoint before, but this is the most confusing security model I've ever seen!! :). There are so many different types of permissions that can be granted in so many different places, I too was hoping for a guide just to get these people linked to server from the client.

I even had users navigate to the /PWA site and request access. I received the email, clicked "HERE" which brought me to the page where I can assign a group to them. I selected web admin and they still get the same message when they try to hit /PWA that they don't have access and allows them to send an email to request it. Looking at the user in question, I see his permissions are as seen in this screenshot

I wonder if perhaps you're only changing SharePoint security, and not modifyingthe Project Server security model? Here's what you need specifically....PWA > Server Settings > Manage Groups > Project Managers > Global Permissions:Log on to Project Server from Microsoft Project ProfessionalLog On....then make sure the right users are in the Project Managers Group. Alsomake sure they're not in any other groups, which might have conflicting security.PWA > Server Settings > Project Server Permissions:Confirm the following is checked:Log on to Project Server from Project Professional- Andrew LavinskyBlog: http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/epm

Thank you!! I was working with sharepoint and not project users. I had to add the user to project. Interesting you cant browse or "check names" against AD in this section like you can in sharepoint, and then have to manually add all their info (name, email, etc) but I added the user and we've successfully connected her Project 2010 client.
WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doesnt seem to like the Domain Users group much. Added only 17 users out of about 120.

event viewer actually said domain users was empty, so i must have pulled those in while playing with a different group. built a new dynamic group and added all domain users and synced to that and we're good. this should be the last of my posts in this thread :).
