Console gives error message: "... experienced a problem with a feature during the previous attempt to open it. ..." RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I try to use the console from either of my computers, I get the error message,

"The Windows Home Server Console experienced a problem with a feature during the previous attempt to open it.  If the problem persists, please call Product Support.

To try to open the console again, click Retry.  To open the console without the feature so you can troubleshoot with Product Support, click Skip."

When I click "Skip", I go to the console, I don't see anything wrong.  The console takes unusually long to open up with this error.

What is going on?  Who or what is "Product Support"?

  • "Product Support" is the system builder or OEM from whom you obtained your server. If it's a self-built server, you are "product support". :)

Have you recently installed anything on your server? Uninstalled anything?

  • OK, I am product support.

No, I might have suspected any recent changes as being the source of the problem.  I hadn't done anything to the server for a long time.  It was just humming along doing its job for months at least and then suddenly this error message started popping up.  I was logging in every day at the console to shut it down for the evening when I started getting these messages.

  • You can try running chkdsk on all the drives in your server; it's possible that there's a disk problem which is causing a problem in the console. YOu may also want to take a look at the event logs on your server around the time of one of these errors to see if there's anything there. Also, there are logs on your server in (from memory) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Home Server which might have some hints.

  • I ran chkdsk on both drives, DATA and SYS and got "0 KB in bad sectors" on both drives.

I looked in the logs and tried booting up the console inside Home Server to see it provoke a log, and it came up without any problems.  I went back to my client machine and tried again and it came up OK too.  But my first attempt this morning did show an error in both the client machine and WHS.  Here are the console logs for this morning around this little incident:

Naturally, if it continues to be a problem, I'll be back.

I have noticed that the WHS default website has returned and I used to have a bunch of personalized stuff on there and I think it was from some plugin.

  • What Add-Ins are you running?

  • I had some Add-Ins, but there is no longer any evidence of what they were, as near as I can tell.  I think there was some kind of website manager.  I think they vanished after an automatic upgrade.

  • I don't remember what finally happened.  But my WHS has been up and running with no problems for at least 6 months now.  This is an extremely old post.
