Cannot get Windows Live One Care to back up onto new external hard drive, could not find your current backup device J:\

Question
-
I have been using Windows Live One Care and backing up onto an external hard drive. The external hard drive became full and I couldn't back up anymore. So I bought a new Seagate external hard drive. I've connected it to the computer and it shows up on the computer. I did not install Seagate Manager because I want to continue to use Windows Live One Care. When I try to back up to this new hard drive using Windows Live One Care, it says it could not find your current back up device J:\. How do I proceed to back up my files onto this new external hard drive using Windows Live One Care?

HI!
Configure the backup again. Change settings--> backup-->configure backup--> next--> click on change location--> locate for the new device --> ok--> next--> save. Make sure that Onecare is actually detecting the backup device before creating a new backup again.

This still does not fix the problem.....reseting the back-up plan did not fix the issue of it saying the external was "not turned on".......????Saturday, August 1, 2009 6:14 PM

HI!
You have to make sure that Onecare backup is turned on on that computer, then reset the back-up plan.

You did not turn off backup for that PC, save it, then reconfigure backup to use the new drive - that is what the reset does. When backup runs, it wants to write to the existing location that it knows about. You don't have that drive any longer and have attached a new drive. So, you need to start a new, full backup to the new drive, but you need to force OneCare to forget about the old one.

However, you may wish to abandon the OneCare backup now, as OneCare will cease fully functioning when your current subscription ends.See this post for End of Life information for Windows Live OneCare - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecaregeneral/thread/81996436-edad-41ba-bdfc-02fc094e2ca9
