Cannot start Workstation service, fails on error 1068 (Vista SP2) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
This is about a year that I can't start the Workstation service on my Windows Vista SP2 (HP Pavilion dv9000).
It fails on: 'Error 1068' 'The dependency service or group failed to start'.

CBS.log from sfc/scannow shows messages like:
    - Repairing corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:62{31}]"\??\C:\Windows\System32\drivers"\[l:24{12}]"mrxsmb20.sys"
    - Repairing corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:46{23}]"\??\C:\Windows\System32"\[l:24{12}]"ntkrnlpa.exe"
    - Repairing corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:62{31}]"\??\C:\Windows\System32\drivers"\[l:20{10}]"mrxsmb.sys"
    - Repairing corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:62{31}]"\??\C:\Windows\System32\drivers"\[l:24{12}]"mrxsmb10.sys"
System check reports shows an issue on:
    - exitcode: 1068 on scname: LanmanWorkstation
I have spent hours troubleshooting and suspect I would need to replace the mrxsmb files but I'm not sure.
I have lived with the problem for months but now it prevents me from installing Adobe software updates for Photoshop that requires the Workstation service to run. I can't access anymore another XP workstation through the network.

FYI: my mrxsmbxxx.sys files are all from 2010 02 23.
Windows Updates are current except one, the Windows Vista security update KB981852 that never succeeded to install on my pc.

    Your suggestions are very welcome.
    Thank you for your assistance.
