Windows 7600 Not genuine - but its a retail copy that was sealed? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I woke up this morning and recieved an error that my copy of windows was not genuine and now have a watermark in the lower right stating the build is not genuine.  I tried activating using slui at the command line, but when trying to activate via the instructions it said the product key was blocked.  i then tried doing it over the phone to activate, but same issue....

I built this PC myself, 4 months ago.  The windows is windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, full retail version from the store.  I have the box, case, CD with hologram, and the case had the sticker at the top still sealed and the shrink wrap and everything.  I used the product key inside the box, so im certain its legit.  I installed it 4 months ago, activated it then and had no issues until today.

I ran the MGADiag tool as mentioned in other threads, here are the results:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I understand there is alot of pirating on ebay and craigslist, but this is the full retail thing.  if its a fake, its the greatest fake of all time.

  • what do you mean by "ask the seller"?  you mean staples?
    Wednesday, April 21, 2010 3:38 PM
  • yes so they can pull all of them because this key is block
    Wednesday, April 21, 2010 3:40 PM
  • so they can give me a new key and then i just enter it or do i have to re-install windows?  id rather not reinstall as i have a ton of files and stuff on here....

also, i got this around christmas time, this is not a recent install... not sure if that matters?

    Wednesday, April 21, 2010 3:42 PM
  • no get the new key just enter it
    Wednesday, April 21, 2010 3:44 PM
  • thanks!   heading to staples now!
    Wednesday, April 21, 2010 3:54 PM
  • it took it to staples, since i did not have the receipt still, they would not exchange it for me.  i told them it wasnt genuine and they said without a recipet there was nothing i could do... I was going to buy another windows 7 ultimate, but didnt feel comforable after the last one was not genuine...

so i guess i need to buy a new key?  what is the safest way to buy it and know its legit?  id hate to spend another $300 and have it not work again =-(

can i buy it through microsoft over the phone/web?

  • doh, was hoping there was a cheaper option for $200 or so.... oh well i guess now at least ill have the peace of mind of knowing that the copy is 100% legit....  i still cant believe something off the shelves that looks so authentic is a fake.  funny, i spent the extra cash and bought it retail to AVOID getting a pirated copy... =-(

  • I got the same thing today. I rebooted and bam, it says that it's not genuine. What gives? My version was downloaded from the MSDNAA website last Summer. There's no way it's fake.

As a student, I don't have the money to buy it.

  • Just to provide soem confirnation, I have check the Product Key from the above Diagnostic Report and it is, in fact, a Blocked MSDN Product Key.

I recommend submitting a Piracy Report, either using the URL that bertmace26 has provided or by going to http://microsoft.com/piracy.
