  • Hi,
renaming is possible, I never tried about deletion.
It is unsupported, and before you try it, you should move out all data from the share.

    • Login to your home server locally or via Remote Desktop.
    • Click Start/Run and type regedit.
    • In Registry Editor navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\Storage Manager\Shares.
    • Check the values in the sub keys to find the share, you are interested in.
    • There are two values, which you need to change: ShareName (for the name, the value FriendlyName, which also exists, seems to do nothing if touched solely) and ShareComment (for the description).
    • After altering reboot the server.
    • Now you will have a new shared folder with the properties of the old one (and if I remember correctly, the old one also still exists, but can now be deleted via console).

I never tested what happens, if you delete an entire key here. But be aware, that removing a share like Software will cause connector installations and updates to fail.

  • If you use the streaming media features built into Windows Home Server, you should not rename the Music, Photos, and Videos shares. You should also not rename the Users share, or the Software share (as Olaf has pointed out). That leaves the Public share as possibly being safe to rename.

  • Hi  Ken,
I am pretty sure, that renaming the media shares is not dangerous.
There are properties written within the attributes sub key which seem to determine this stuff (value WMConnect I would assume).
I have renamed my shares also after migration from English RC to final in German without seeing any bad outcome.

  • Hello,

I'm running WHS on an Acer Easystore h340. The unfortunte thing about it is that since I live on Taiwan

my software is in Chinese. All my shares were named in Chinese, so I was glad to come across this post.

I followed the steps Olaf discribed to the dot. At first everything seemed fine. I had my folders renamed

and was able to access them via ftp. However, after the renaming process I'm not able to access my Acer

via https anymore, nor can I connect to it through the connector software on the client. A remote connect

    still works.

What did I do wrong or better how can I solve the problem?

    Greetings from Taiwan

  • Honestly, I think your best bet is to copy everything out of your server's shares and do a factory reset. This will flatten your server completely, leaving it in "as shipped" state. I doubt that a server recovery will help much; your problem appears to be because you renamed your server's shares, and a recovery will expect them to have the original names.

You'll find the procedure for a factory reset in your manual.

  • Thank you for your quick response.

Though the answer isn't what I hoped to hear. I just have

done a complete reset a day ago.

    I have one more question.

Is it somehow possible to get a different language installed

(legally) on the WHS without buying another WHS OS?

You would have to buy at least a new OEM license (if not an entirely new server).

  • Thanks for your reply.

Buying a new server isn't really necessary.

Some additional hardware is needed, though.

A completely new setup of the easystore h340

    would be then possible.

I'm almost done with another factory reset and

guess I'm gonna use the Chinese version.

  • Hi Markus,

did you touch the Software share? This contains some stuff, which is critical for WHS. Or did you alter something in Internet Information Server? (since you mention FTP)

This could be a possible reason, why you experience, what you experience. And, since the thread is rather old, something could have been changed as result of an WHS update/PowerPack.

FTP funktioniert

immernoch nicht. Die Verbindung ueber meinen Browser jedoch schon. Werds wohl erstmal dabei belassen.

Hatte zuvor dieses Procedere ins Auge gefasst

    http://jerret.de/informationstechnik/grafikkarte-fuer-acer-aspire-easystore-h340.html

    Viele Gruesse

That maybe so Ken but the translation from English, or better American I suppose, has left me with a challenge..:-\

One of the user shares is called Videos in English, but in Dutch that turns out to be Video's. Grammatically correct, but try to mount that on a Linux device...

So do you, or anyone, have a usable solution for this challenge?
