Port Forwarding

Question
-
I am trying to setup up my BT Homehub 5 router for remote access. Do I need to open any of the UDP Ports? (User Datagram Protocol) I understand that I need to open up Ports, 80,443,3389 and 4125 TCP's. BT have stated that it is unusual for the UDP Ports not to be opened. Unfortunately I have very limited experience in this area.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Assuming your router is uPnP, WHS 2011 will try (and often succeed) to set up the required port forwarding itself. Should this fail then you need only forward ports 80 and 443 with the TCP protocol. Port 3389 is only needed if you want to RDP to your Server Desktop (and my introduce some security risk therefore).
Good luck,

Hi Umf,
Thank you very much for your prompt response, it is greatly appreciated. I spoke to BT this morning and they mentioned the UDP. Have you any knowledge regarding those ports? Do I still need to open up port 4125?
Kind Regards
Steve

Not to my knowledge and I am certain I have not forwarded 4125. IIRC, that port was required for WHS v1 only.
Wrt UDP, I can only speculate that many do not actually know what is required and therefore open both (TCP & UDP) but AFAIK you do not need UDP.
I suggest you simply try with 80 and 443 and TCP only and let us know how it goes.

Hi Steve,
As Umf mentioned, if UPnP is supported, Windows Home Server may be able to automatically configure the broadband router. If the router does not support UPnP, you must manually configure router to forward ports to the IP address of your Windows Home Server. Please also refer to following article and check if can help you.
