  • The driver should not cause an activation request on its own. Have you checked for the latest version from the manufacturer?

Please run a new MGADiag report, then attempt the driver install and run a second MGADiag report - if necessary you can then roll teh driver back, and run a third report.

Post them all with details of any error messages found.

  • Permission denied errors are often caused by mistakenly setting folder content to 'read-only'

    try this....

    First try this.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windowsfolder. find the System32 folder there, and right-click on it - select Properties.

In the General tab, clear the box beside 'Read-only (Only.....' by clicking in it until it's empty (it cycles around three values)

    Click Apply.

Accept any warnings that come up - if you get a 'Ignore/Ignore All/Try again' option, pick 'Ignore all'

    Once complete

reboot, and run another MGADiag report.

  • try recreating Licensing Store.

    Recreate the Licensing Store

    1. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
    2. Right-Click      on Command Prompt and select Run as      Administrator - accept the UAC prompt
    3.  Run the following commands in the Command      Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

    net stop sppsvc

(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

    CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar
    net start sppsvc
    slui.exe

    1. After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear.

You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

  • Following your methods of recreating token.dat store, I'm getting the exact same error. Please see reports attached below.

I was able to reinstall from scratch (no SP1 and without ANY Windows Update) and actually activated Windows right after the fresh install. However, after applying some device driver updates, Windows Activation was reset. I am convinced this is related to hardware drivers, as the my USB drives always disappears from "Safely Remove Hardware" task bar whenever the activation was reset.

A list of device drivers listed below:
    - Gigabyte 3TB+ Unlock B11.0919.1
    - NVIDIA Graphics Driver 301.42
    - REALTEK Wireless LAN Driver

The 3TB+ harddrive driver is the most likely culprit. Since I have activated the same copy of Windows 7 on a different hard drive and used to for almost 1 year.
    http://www.gigabyte.us/fileupload/microsite/276/3tb.html

Unfortunately, uninstall the 3TB+ driver doesn't solve the problem.

  • OK the probem is obviously rather deep-seated - we'll have to do some digging.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and tun the following commands - paste the results in your reply

    NET START SPPSVC
    REG QUERY HKU\S-1-5-20
    REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-20"
    sc sdshow plugplay
    ATTRIB %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\*.*
    DIR C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService
    DIR C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService /AH /b

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • Please note, the system I originally had problem with, was re-installed from scratch. It does not have Gigabyte 3TB+ driver installed, and are now successfully reactivated. But I will run your commands nevertheless, hopefully this will help other guys.

  • This 3TB harddrive has partitions of the following sizes: 500GB (C:\Windows) + 1.5TB + 1TB. The last 1TB space will remain unusable without the Gigabyte 3TB+ Driver, which will reset Windows Activation.
