  • The Product Key in use is the Default (Keyless Install) Key which cannot be activated. You need to change the 25-character product key to the one on the sticker included in the Windows 7 retail package and activate the system - probably over the phone.
To change the Product Key, go to the System Properties page, and use the link at the bottom - follow the instructions.
If Internet activation fails, use telephone activation.
    Click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI 4
    and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions - but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you.

  • If you did a clean install using an upgrade key then you need to restore the previous copy of Windows and then upgrade using either a custom install or an upgrade install, depending on what the previous version is.  An upgrade key is not intended to be used for a clean install and will not activate if a qualifying copy of Windows is not aready on the computer when the upgrade Setup is started.

  • I marked both of the above posts as the answer because depending how you installed the Upgrade, either of the posts would be correct.

    specifically:

    a) if you installed using the Upgrade process, but did not enter the Product Key during install then Windows would use it's Default key and Carey's post would resolve your issue (note, I am not sure if this scenario is even possible, but if so, then follow Carey's post)

    b) if you installed using the Clean/Full install process, then Cbarnhorst's post would resolve your issue.
