To give you an accurate answer, we would need to know:

    1.  What kind of XP license do you have, is it full retail, ugrade retail, systembuilder/OEM or major manufacturer/OEM?

Retail would have been purchased in a nice fancy off-the-shelf box.  Full retail would have had "For PCs without Windows or with Windows 95" printed on the box.

The kind of OEM license can be determined from the second line printed on the Certificate of Authenticity affixed to the old computer.  If it has the manufacturer's name on the CoA, it is major manufacturer; if it has "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" printed on it, it is systembuilder/OEM.

    2.  What editon of Vista came on the computer and was that a retail or OEM license?
