Larger restore jobs fail RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a desktop running 32-bit Windows XP Professional, whose network name is BIGBOY.  I've been backing it up for nearly two years with WHS.  Recently I had a hard drive in BIGBOY fail.  I restored the entire image successfully, using the latest backup job.

I'm now moving to 64-bit Windows 7.  Since I prefer clean installs, I confirmed that I had a fresh backup on WHS and also backed up the key data with Windows Easy Transfer.  The OS installation went smoothly.  But unfortunately I can't open the backup image created by Windows Easy Transfer, which I now understand may be the result of problems with that utility when using a password to protect the images.

So I went to WHS and mounted the most recent backup.  The images mounted successfully and I am able to move a few files at a time, if they're small.  If they're larger--say, a directory with 250 MB, or a single ISO of 1GB--the backup dismounts halfway through the file transfer.  This has happened a dozen times in a row.  I can continue moving a few files at a time but this will take me days.

    Thoughts?

  • If you check here (I think this path is valid for Windows 7) on the client that you've been trying to restore:
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\logs

You'll find logs of the various Windows Home Server operations. Look for one from just after your most recent restore attempt and see if it shows you anything.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Here are the last four logs, in what I believe to be sequential order.  I'm not seeing an answer, but perhaps it's my uneducated eye.

  • Quick question: Did you keep the Windows Explorer Window for drive Z: open all the time? (Closing it disconnects it.)
    Best greetings from Germany
