error 401 unauthorized RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have installed CRM 4.0 on a test server.  This test server is a domain controller of its own domain separate from our main corporate domain.  The name of this domain is crmtest2.com.  In the DNS server or our corporate domain, I have created an A record that points to the CRM server.  So the configuration is similar to this:

    Server name: crmtest2dc1

    Domain name: crmtest2

    IP Address: 192.168.250.55

Name of A record on corporate DNS server: crmtest

Domain name of corporate network: company.com

The problem is that when I try to access the server using the FQDN (crmtest.company.com) I sometimes get 401 errors when opening or creating entities such as contacts or accounts.  The frequency of these errors is random.  But when I do the same thing by accessing the server via IP address I do not get this error.  I also do not get this error when I logon to the server directly and I use the address crmtest2dc1 or if I use the IP address.  I do get the error on the server when I use the FQDN (crmtest.company.com).  The Windows event log has this information:

    Exception information:
        Exception type: WebException
Exception message: The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized.

I did not include the entire message since it is quite long and has some sensitive info.  I don't think I need to use the IFD tool do I?  Just for kicks I ran it but I still have problems.

    Thanks.

    Hope it helps,

Error message when you run the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Configuration Wizard of the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 client for Outlook: "The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized"

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:
    • If you use the An online service provider option when you run the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Configuration Wizard, make sure that the IP address of the client is not included in the InternalNetworkAddress registry subkey.
    • If you use the My company option when you run the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Configuration Wizard, make sure that the IP address of the client is included in the InternalNetworkAddress registry subkey.
    Notes
    • If the Microsoft Dynamics CRM client for Outlook users contains internal users and external users, we recommend that you configure the Microsoft Dynamics CRM client for Outlook by using the My company option and make sure that the IP address of the client is included in the InternalNetworkAddress registry subkey. Therefore, you can specify the intranet address and the external Web address when you configure the Microsoft Dynamics CRM client for Outlook.
    • If the Microsoft Dynamics CRM client for Outlook users contains only external users, you can configure the Microsoft Dynamics CRM client for Outlook by using the An online service provider option. Therefore, you can only specify the external Web address when you configure the Microsoft Dynamics CRM client for Outlook.
To define the InternalNetworkAddress registry key, use the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Internet-Facing Deployment (IFD) Configuration tool.

Note the InternalNetworkAddress registry subkey is located in the following registry key of the Microsoft Dynamics CRM server:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSCRM\IfdInternalNetworkAddress
