Restore PC without Restore Disc

Question
-
Is it possible to restore a PC from a backup on the server without using the disc?
Due to a network problem, I have to update my host file (so that it maps my WHS' IP to its name) so that my computers can communicate with the WHS. This is fine within Windows when I want to access the console or to perform a backup, but the Restore CD does not honor my host file, and thus can't see the server.
Is there any way to accomplish this? At the moment, my WHS is completely useless without the ability to restore a backup.Friday, September 5, 2008 5:05 PM

Will Diaz said:Add a REG_DWORD value of that name, with value "0". Apparently, changing (or adding) that value forces the system to recalculate the correct value of NodeType.
I checked the Knowledge Base article, and that EnableProxy entry does not exist. Should I create it? If so, what should it be?
(Concerning the Local Domain Name option. Did some googling on this. Apparently this is not the issue. As you can not change it to empty, just leave it to the original setting for now.)
At this point I am out of options (for now...)

Theo, I just gave up on this problem.
Instead I just used the Vonage router, since it did not seem to be affected by the bad DNS issue (where pinging ALLSPARK, the WHS, would return a different IP and thus my PCs could not "find" the WHS).
This workaround will have to do, as no one I have spoken to (here, IT friends, at my ISP or with the router manufactuerer) seems to know why this would happen or what the solution would be.
Thanks guys, I appreciate your help.- Marked as answer by Lara JonesModerator Monday, October 27, 2008 3:55 PM

No. As far as I know using the Restore CD is your only option.
Are all PC's in the network having trouble, i.e needing a host file for resolving the server name? If not, this problem is likely located on the PC's OS. If that is the case it is likely that the restore CD will not have a problem.
I would try starting the restore CD to see if it does find the server.
(be careful not to start the restore process unless you want to - abort or maybe swap in a spare drive?)
If this does not work, my primary concern would be to resolve the 'network problem'.

All of the PCs are having this problem. I've been working for days trying to resolve this. I have resorted to updating the host file on all of the computers. This works well enough for backing up, but the restore CD issue is still there.
The restore CD can't find the server at all, since that process takes place outside of Windows and will not recognize the host file.Friday, September 5, 2008 6:02 PM -
The origine of your network problem is either in the configuration of your network connection or in your router.
Do you use DNS or fixed IP's?
What address have you configured on your PC's for your DNS server?
No home server like Home ServerFriday, September 5, 2008 6:08 PMModerator -
Will,
Your Restore CD won't work unless you have a functioning network, as you have found and you cannot do a Restore, without using that CD.
Has this network problem always existed and how does it manifest itself, as there should be no reason to have to use a Hosts file.
If you give us some details etc., maybe we can get your network working correctly, before you need to have to use a Restore CD!

I use DNS at the moment.
My PC is set up to use the router at 192.168.2.1 as its DHCP and DNS server.
The issue has manifested itself recently; up until a week ago I have had no problem with this. I even bought another router last night, thinking that the old linksys was to blame. It shows the same symptoms.
What other details can I provide?
Edit: I should mention that I can connect to the internet just fine. If I ping the WHS' IP address (192.168.2.5) I get responses, but if I ping the WHS' name (ALLSPARK) it goes out to 204.13.161.92.- Edited by Will Diaz Friday, September 5, 2008 6:28 PM added extra details

Could you please run from the command prompt "C:\>ipconfig /all"
And post the results?
Edit: best to do this on a client PC and on the WHS server.
Have a look at the "Node Type" reported. What does it say?

It would sound as though your server isn't set up correctly.
Could you also post the 'ipconfig /all' for the server, not only the client?

Question. I'm a bit puzled about the origine of the DNS suffixes listed.
Does the DNS tab on the PC and/or server IP-configuration list any specific DNS suffixes (as it should not unless you are in a domain)?

Will,
It would appear that your server has had a Proxy enabled at some point, how I don't know.
However, if you are comfortable editing the registry on your server, then you need to change a key.
This knowledgebase from Microsoft, explains what and how.
If you aren't, let us know, and we'll try and figure another way.

Colin,
I was thinking in the direction of a problem with the NodeType. But it seems fine to me.
"Unknown" should *not* (edit!) be a real problem as far as I know. Actually both my WHS server IP-configurations list as "Unknown".

There is a workaround. remove the disk from the PC you want to restore and connect it to some other PC. Then run C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server\ClientRestoreWizard.exe to restore the drive, selecting the correct computer and backup to restore. In the long run, you should sort out your network issue. The Restore CD requires DHCP to be available and functional, and requires that there be no security to access the network (thus a secured wireless connection doesn't work).

There's a 'Local Domain Name (Optional) >' option in the Belkin router admin which is set to 'Belkin.' Perhaps that's where the DNS suffix is coming from?
I checked the Knowledge Base article, and that EnableProxy entry does not exist. Should I create it? If so, what should it be?
Key, String Value, Binary Value, DWORD Value, Multi-string Value, or Expandable String Value?Friday, September 5, 2008 7:41 PM -
Will.
Try switching off the 'Local Domain Name' option, then restart your server and client PC's.

Ken,
The issue with that proposed solution is that this network probelm affects every single computer in the network. Right now I've paired down the network to just this computer and the server to keep things simple, but this happens with both desktops and the notebooks as well. If I took my HDD to another computer, I'd just run into the same problem.Friday, September 5, 2008 7:44 PM -

Colin, Ken, I'd like to thank you also for taking the time to respond.
If anything else comes to mind, please post it. I'm willing to try anything to get this up and running again.
At this point, I'm losing hope that I'll ever get this working the way it is supposed to. If I can't resolve the network issue, then I am forced to get rid of the WHS and look for an alternate means of backing up my computers (I really like the simplicity of the WHS and I would like to avoid finding another solution).Friday, September 5, 2008 9:03 PM -
Just some thoughts:
- Your IPconfig output revealed the use of the Check Point VPN solution.
Do you by any chance have this installed on the client PC's that are having trouble with local name resolution? - NetBT ports blocked?
Did you try disabling the firewall.
Any router configurations on UDP port 137?

I believe that Checkpoint and "Integrity Clientless Security for Connectra NGX" are the same thing (the latter is what I use on my work PC to VPN into the company network). It is the only PC that I run that VPN solution on.
I have not tried disabling the firewall, but do you mean on the clients, the WHS, or the router?
There are no configurations on UDP port 137.Saturday, September 6, 2008 7:01 AM -
Wrong configuration of the firewall on the client could prohibit name resolution. I asked specifically for the VPN configurations as most VPN configurations disable local network access when active or even use their own firewall.
As all your PC clients show the same problems it is not likely that this is a firewall or VPN client problem (unless of coarse you installed VPN or alike on all clients)

Hello Will,
Thanks for reporting this back.
Although with this work around you can not restore a complete machine at least you can open backups and restore single files.
Just one thing that comes to mind (just in case you did try this not already?):
Maybe disconnecting the your ISP connection (cable/DSL modem) and restarting your router and server might help in some way.

You know, I actually can't get to my backups. Whenever WHS gets 97% through opening a backup, Vista bluescreens.
That reminds me of my separate issue of my new 64-bit Vista notebook that has successfully backed up twice of the 15 or so attempts I've made so far. Needless to say, I am having many computer issues right now.
I will attempt to restart my router without the cable modem connected to it. At this point, nothing can hurt. It'll have to wait until tomorrow afternoon after work though.
