  • Hi,

a good starting point is http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/cert-vstudio.aspx#tab2. You find available certifications on Visual Studio / .Net there. The Exam-Codes (e.g. 70-515) are links to exam pages where you find a lot of usefull information e.g.:
    - Preparation Materials
    - Skills Measured

So you can check the material (which cost money) or you can simply go through the skills measured and look all things up on MSDN Library.

    With kind regards,

    Konrad

  • The first exams you'll need to do are these:

    - .Net Framework 4: Windows Applications (exam 70-511) => Microsoft Press Self Paced Training Kit
    - Data Access (exam 70-516) => Microsoft Press Self Paced Training Kit
    - Service Communication Applications (exam 70-513) => For this exam there isn't a book available (read this thread on the forum), but the book for exam 70-503 is used to prepare for this exam (very similar), and it's also a Microsoft Press Self Paced Training Kit

  • Here is an overview of the Visual Studio 2010 certification (in PDF)

So for winforms (MCPD Windows Developer 4), you'll need to do the following exams:

First of all, 3 MCTS certifications:

    - .Net Framework 4: Windows Applications (exam 70-511)
    - Data Access (exam 70-516)
    - Service Communication Applications (exam 70-513)

This covers the basics. After these, you can do an addictional exam (a PRO exam) to obtain the MCPD certification (MCPD = Microsoft Certified Professional Developer):

    - PRO: Designing and Developing Windows Applications using Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (exam 70-518)

  • Hi Vinod,

I think that http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/cert-vstudio.aspx#tab2 is a good starting point. All Exams are links to a page covering the exam in detail (e.g. naming preparation materials and topics covered).

  • Well, you read the book on 70-515, do the excersises, see that you understand everything you're reading. And when you feel yourself that you are prepared enough to take the exam, you go to the prometric web site and schedule an exam at an exam center near you.

Not having time for classes isn't really a problem, but you will need to take your time for studying.

  • Hi,

you are concentrating on general Windows Client development or only Windows Forms?

Microsoft changed the technology for windows applications and starting with Visual Studio 2010, Windows Presentation Foundation is the technology you need to know inside the exams. So if you do the 70-511, you have to know WPF. If you want to get certified in Windows Forms, the exam 70-505 (Visual Studio 2008 / MCTS: .NET Framework 3.5, Windows Forms Applications) would be the best fitting one.

But really think about that step, because that is an older exam and to be MCTS, you need to do the 70-536 exam, too. The only good point might be, that there is a MCPD certification available after just 3 exams (without any WCF / ADO.Net exams) but that MCPD is not as much worth as the enterprise one.

So the 70-511 exam would be the exam you should take as long as you do not have good reasons to do a Windows Forms exam.

    With kind regards,

    Konrad

  • hi Dimitri,

I am a .net web developer in one company, and i am looking for .net certification. I have a little bit of knowledge about it means:

I have to do 70-515 exam firstly to become a MCPD, this is the initial step. and i have "MCTS.Self-Paced.Training.Kit.Exam.70-515.Dec.2010" as PDF too.

But having confused about its preparation. Should i join any institute or self preparatiom would be enough?

    So please suggest me something.

    Thanks.

  • The idea of the self-paced training kits is that you can work on this on your own time (meaning that a little bit of self-discipline is needed). You can also check with your local training center if they have any courses available for that exam, or for that topic. But in my experience, the courses always had an enormous amount of knowledge packed in a couple of days, you still need a lot of work afterwards to process all the information (learn, do excercises,...). So i've always used the self-paced training kits as guides in my learning.
