problem clearing text alerts from main page

   the main page of my HTC PRO 2 phone has a text icon which shows  the number of text messages recieved (an alert).  the alert is stuck on the number 2 even though I have completely erased all incoming and out going texts from my phone.  it has stayed there for a couple of weeks and I have done everything short of completely resetting my phone.  any ideas on how to clear this problem?
