The snippet above tells us that you have an installation of Microsoft Expression Web 2 on you computer (Expression Web is now a free program.)

The report is also telling us that you have two installations of Office Professional Plus 2007 on the computer.  The installation that is reporting as nongenuine is a Volume Licensing (VL) edition of Office Professional Plus that was installed with a now-blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK).  The other installation of Office Professional Plus 2007 is a retail license edition that is reporting as not yet activated.

Office Professional Plus 2007 is an edition of Office that is available thru the Volume Licensing program and thru special academic programs not available to the general public.  In order to legitimately use Office Professional Plus 2007, your use of the program must be in association with either such a Volume Licensing Agreement, or you would have acquired Office Professional Plus thru some sort of Home Use program from a University or other type of educational institution.  can you verify that your use of Office Professional Plus 2007 would fall into this category?

In order to Get Genuine, you have to uninstall the nongenuine VL edition of Office Professional Plus 2007 from your computer, then restart twice, then activate the not-yet-activated and presumably genuine retail licensed edition of Office Professional Plus 2007.

The sticky part is that with both installations on the computer at the same time, it may be difficult to determine which one should be uninstalled from the Programs applet of the Control Panel.  One way to try to figure this out is to look for the "Last used on..." data and assume that the one that is being identified as nongenuine is the one that has the most recent "last used on" date.  Within the Programs applet you may have to right click the column header bar and add the "Last used on..." date column as it is not displayed by default.

Once you have uninstalled what hopefully is the nongenuine Office, restart twice, and then open an Office program such as Word 2007.  If you guessed correctly, you should be presented with the Activation Wizard, so complete the online activation process normally.  Restart once more.

Then visit www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Office button.  Office should validate normally.

Finally, open an Office program such as Word 2007 to check to make sure you do not see any nongenuine messages.  If you do, we have some cleanup to do, so post back for more instructions.

  • I haven't a clue how the VL version got on my computer, as I never entered a VL licensing code.

Windows 7 does not seem to show me the last used date (I forced it to display this column in the add/remove programs window). All other information about the "two" programs is identical (e.g. the installation date, version, name, etc).  Should I just uninstall it two times, and then try to install it once?

  • Hello Lev Seltzer,

If there is no last used date available, then you can try your luck and pick one (you have a 50% chance of picking correctly :-)) or you can uninstall both instances and reinstall your genuine Office.

  • I picked one of the installations, uninstalled it, and MS Office began to work without the warning immediately (no reboot required). However, I ran the "repair" program to bring back the missing shortcuts, and then rebooted.

So far, so good. I just hope I don't get another warning in 30 days!
