RDC to WHS V1 after Vail Connector install RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

After installing the Vail connector on one of my machines I have had a problem connecting to my WHS Version 1 server with Remote Desktop Connection. I receive an invalid certificate error on this machine only - all other computers which have not had the Vail connector installed can RDC fine. Removing the Vail connector and re-installing the WHS V1 connector fixes the problem.

    Has anyone else seen this?

  • Could you perhaps report a bug on Connect? Include server and client logs collected with the Vail log collector tool.

That said, this is really by design, and I doubt that Microsoft will attempt to fix it. The certificate that's used to authenticate Remote Desktop is "self signed" by the server, and when you remove the V1 connector I believe you remove the V1 root certificate. Thus the error.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

    Yes,
and I think this is because of reasons explained by Ken.

As you may know, you can ignore the certificate error by selecting "Connect and don't warn me" under the mstsc options tab "Advanced", "if server authentication fails".
