    Hello there,

    I recently changed the HDD of my computer and did a fresh install of Windows Vista x64, however when i try to activate my windows i get an error 0x80070005 so i tried to re-enter my code from the microsoft sticker, didn't work, looked if the computer had the right time and date, they were correct, entered slui 4.exe in the search field of the start button, called the number, but then i saw there was no installation id, so i could not get a response because there was no id to fill in so i installed the diagnostic tool.

    Let's go back a few steps....

    Please open Regedit.

    Navigate to the

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\PlugPlay

    key, and right-click on it.

    Select Permissions (all permissions entries should be greyed out, because they are inherited)

    The following users should have entries....

    CREATOR OWNER (Special permissions - Subkeys only - Full)

    SYSTEM - Full and Read

    Administrators - Full and Read

    Users -  Read

    If you click on the Advanced button, all permissions should be inherited from MACHINE\SYSTEM

    If you click on the Owner tab, the Owner should be Administrators.

    Back in the Permissions tab, put a tick in the 'Replace all child object....' box, and click OK out.

    reboot

    post another MGADiag report.

    This is thankfully a rare error - we don't have a ready solution for it.

    I suspect aht is is the same problem as is described here.....

    Please use the manual method there to check the permissions.

    Please also Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

     

    sc sdshow plugplay
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-18" /S

      Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt. 

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once. 

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

    Its odd, because windows wouldnt activate on a previous install on the faulty HDD, would you thinks the disc is damaged too badly (it has some slight scratches)?

    You missed the  SC command (which was probably the most important) - please run it and post the results.

    Normally, if a DVD is damaged, then the install will fail due to CRC failures - so you'd never finish the install.

    That also looks normal.

    We'll have to go back to basics....

    Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

     

    Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

    Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

    Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

     

    At the Command prompt, type

     

    CHKDSK C: /R

     

    and hit the Enter key.

    You will be told that the drive is locked,

    and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

     

    The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

     

    After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

     

    SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

    Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

    Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

    Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

     

    At the Command prompt, type

     

    SFC /SCANNOW

     

    and hit the Enter key

     

    Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

     

     

    Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

     

    Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

    Let's go back a few steps....

    Please open Regedit.

    Navigate to the

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\PlugPlay

    key, and right-click on it.

    Select Permissions (all permissions entries should be greyed out, because they are inherited)

    The following users should have entries....

    CREATOR OWNER (Special permissions - Subkeys only - Full)

    SYSTEM - Full and Read

    Administrators - Full and Read

    Users -  Read

    If you click on the Advanced button, all permissions should be inherited from MACHINE\SYSTEM

    If you click on the Owner tab, the Owner should be Administrators.

    Back in the Permissions tab, put a tick in the 'Replace all child object....' box, and click OK out.

    reboot

    Hmm, when I look at the entries of CREATOR OWNER, I just see the special permission box checked. The little box with full isn't checked. Also, all users didnt inherit from MACHINE/SYSTEM at first (but I did some tinkering I guess and now they do), and when I tick the box with "replace all child object etc." (Thats the second box right? Its far from a literal translation so I have to do some interpretation, and the tech-talk is a bit confusing) I get a message that the computer can't set up security/safety for the selected keys, or one or more sub-keys.

    Hmm, when I look at the entries of CREATOR OWNER, I just see the special permission box checked. The little box with full isn't checked. Also, all users didnt inherit from MACHINE/SYSTEM at first (but I did some tinkering I guess and now they do), and when I tick the box with "replace all child object etc." (Thats the second box right? Its far from a literal translation so I have to do some interpretation, and the tech-talk is a bit confusing) I get a message that the computer can't set up security/safety for the selected keys, or one or more sub-keys.

    That message usually means that you haven't got ownership of the values.

    Please go back in, and click on the Owners tab in Advanced - then Replace ownership of the subcontainers and objects.

    OK out to Reedit and go back in and try to change the permissions again - it should work now.

    Go back in again and enable Administrators with Full permissions, and force it to child objects, then try again.
