Office XP updates say activation needed, but office XP reports it is already activated

Question
-
Good day,
Working with a client of mine and trying to get office xp updates to fix the 2 GB limit in Outlook. When I try to get the updates the update site tells me the product is not activated.
When I move to "Activate" under the Help menu, the dialog box tells me the product is already activated.
How in the world do I resolve this issue for them? Outlook will not function sending/receiving email as it is giving an error message "The Messaging interface has returned an unknown error" and of course their email is critical to them.
Their .pst file has approached that 2 GB limit.

computerguy366,
Can you try to run the diagnostic tool again here from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.
Otherwise, please try the following below to see if this will resolve the issue of activation.
1. Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\
NOTE: The application data file may be hidden. Use the Tools drop down menu and follow: Folder Options->View->Hidden Files and Folders->Show Hidden Files and Folders to show the folder. Please re-hide the files once you have completed all the steps.
2. Right click the data.dat file, then click “Delete”.
3. This data.dat file is for Office (not OGA)
4. Once the file has been deleted, open an Office application such as MS Word and “ACTIVATE” it.
5. If product activation was successful try the Office validation again by at : http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/office/Validate.aspx?displaylang=eng
The following Knowledge Base Articles can provide more information for Office Activation issues:
