WGA validation problem

Question
-
I just purchased valid copy of windows online from the microsoft site and when it generated a key for me, i put it in but it gives me an error message saying "Unable to update key because of technical issues or network connectivity. I have good connection because i was on the internet while doing this. I also want to say i deleted and edited a couple of registry entries concerning WGA before purchasing the valid copy, could this be the reason, and if it is what can i do about it? I had a tech rep ecsalate my problem because he could not fix it either? I am running XP home editionSaturday, June 13, 2009 12:52 AM

Hello Sooperman64
Thank you for visiting us. We understand the frustration you are currently experiencing. Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and provide us with the results. The steps are below:
Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.
Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). If you have one, tell us about the COA. Tell us:
1. What edition/version of Windows XP is currently installed or is it another version of Windows?
· Home
· Media Center
· Professional
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
4. Please provide the customer scenario you are experiencing.
5. DO NOT post the Product Key.
Not sure what to look for? See this page for reference: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx
Thank you,
Stephen

Hello sooperman64,
Your problem stems from trying to install Windows XP Home on a Lenovo/IBM computer using a Dell OS Reinstallation CD.
Your best option at this point is to backup and offload whatever data you do not want to lose (docs, pix, music, saved email, etc), then using the genuine XP CDROM that you will receive in the mail (assuming you purchased a WGA Kit), do a clean installaton of XP onto the Lenovo computer.

Oh, ok but I also want ot ask you, my desktop is disabled at this point except i can get on the internet. Is there anyway i can perform a backup of thse items such as pics, docs, music etc. without the use of my desktop? Also, I did purchase the WGA kit online and the cd is on its way. Thank you

Hello sooperman64,
IIRC even though you are in "reduced functionality" jail :-) at the moment, you can start the computer in Safe Mode to access your data so you can offload in preparation for a clean installation.
Try it and post back to let me know if I am right!
