Dynamic disk conversion issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • With Drive Extender gone & with 30 drives on server (10 internal & 20 in 10x dual HD enclosures), did not want to hit the drive letter limit so started converting the internal disks to dynamic.

Leaving the O/S as a seperate basic disk & also the server backup disk as basic, it left me with 8 disks to convert (only converting the internal disks at the moment).  Successfully converted 6 of these & using them as 2x spanned volumes.

Unfortunately, the remaining 2 will not convert - keep getting a Virtual Disk Manager dialogue box stating "the operation is not supported by the object".

All the drives were seen by the O/S when basic drives, so is there a bug in the dynamic disk operation or even a drive limit?

  • My mistake.  Didn't realise that I still had 2 drives connected via USB.  They won't convert, so added them to an internal backplane.
