Or here: I'm not sure what happened, but WHS Vail is worse off than it was
before! I feel like I'm being left to hang from the tree.

Hi,
Actually I think there are a number of problems with server backup in VAIL
preview. See also feedback issue 597084 on Connect.
In my experience a newly set up server backup starts initially backs up the
server and data for some time, then starts getting failed backups when the
backup drives becomes about 50%(?) full. A problem that I was unable to
repair other then reformatting the drive and start anew.
According to MS this problem is closed as "being addressed in the product".
As far as I know no work arrounds available. So we will have to wait for a
next release or even RTM. That why currently I only use the server backup to
backup the VAIL preview server system (no or just minimal data). This
enables me to easely restore the server system disk in case anything goes
wrong. On my test server these backups have been successfull
(*cross-fingers*) on a daily shedule for a couple of weeks now...
Concerning the problem you describe: manually remove any partition on the
backup disk. Then run the server backup wizard to customize your setup.
If this fails you can also try creating a single NTFS partition on the
backup disk before running the wizard.
