What Forum For This Windows 10 Install Question?

    Question

  • I haven't had a response to the following I submitted to the ISV Open Discussions forum.  That shouldn't surprise me because nobody's had a response to a question in that forum for almost 11 months.

TL;DR How do I access my files after a clean install of Windows 10?  The account name is the same, but I don't think that defines a file's ownership.

Where should I post this question?

       Thanks

       ---------------------------------------------------------

I've done a bare metal install of Windows 10, downloaded from this site.

I created a couple of accounts and things seemed to go well, until I unlocked my BitLocker protected drives.

They unlocked without error, the password was valid, but accessing either drive resulted in this error:

I'm guessing the problem is that the fact that the names of the new accounts match the names of the old accounts means nothing, and that there are numbers associated with the accounts, and those numbers don't match.

Like any semi-intelligent being, I did back up everything, using ShadowProtect to two external hard drives.  I also did a direct copy of my most sensitive files onto two BitLocker protected thumb drives.

The external hard drives exhibit the same error when I use ShadowProtect to examine the contents of the drives.

Oddly, and fortunately, the contents of the two BitLocker protected thumb drives are readable by the new accounts on Windows 10.  Why is that if the same files can't be read from the hard drives?

I'm confident I can recover the Windows 8.1 system and return my system to it's pre Windows 10 state from the backups, so I'm not particularly concerned.

How do I get access to existing files after a re-install of windows?

    Thanks
    Larry
