    I had been using Money 2004 with no problems, although I always worked offline.  I recently had to restore my PC to factory settings and having reinstalled Money 2004 I now cannot restore the backup I have on an external hard drive.

    It seems to want my passport.net password to be able to restore the file but I cannot log in.  I've read the information online about the problem and I've tried the fix suggested (working offline, turning off the passport.net password) but still every time I try to restore it I either get an error message saying it can't be opened or I can't log in.

    Have I lost the information in my backup file?

    No.

     

    Odds are, you were actually using Money 2005 rather than 2004. What you will want to do is to download the correct available download for your region via http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/money/thread/479281b2-90f9-42ca-85f7-644fc6e1e5c3 to install the available fixed software.

    Disconnect from the internet. Then open your *.mny or restore your *.mbf file. Log in offline. Then remove your Live ID with File-PasswordManager.

    Great thanks, that worked.  I did have problems to begin with but that seemed to be to do with the location the money document was being saved to (an external hard drive) once I changed that to my C drive it worked.  What a relief!
