i want to put genuine xp back on pc, someone has put non-genuine xp pro on, pc wont allow me to use original software bundle RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought medion pc with xp loaded. After some time I began having different problems and needed a new motherboard, or so I was told. When the pc was returned it had xp pro installed, not geniune. I have since tried to do a clean install with orginal software but got the msg, this has an updated version of xp so would not permit me to use disc.

Is there anything I can do about this? I am not very techy minded, but can survive with correct instructions.

  • Hello bluegem56,

The error message that you are paraphrasing, "this has an updated version of xp so would not permit me to use disc." is encountered when you attempt to do a repair reinstallation of XP using an installation disc with a lower service pack level than that of the installed XP.  So for example if your XP installation is up to SP3 but your installation disc is only up to SP2, and you tried a repair reinstallation, you would get this error.

Work around the problem by performing a clean installation (after backing up any data you cannot afford to lose).  Here is a good tutorial:  http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html
