Trying to activate a previously hacked windows 7 installation... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Folks,

Hope you can help me with this one... I bought a laptop from someone and it had an OEM windows7 on it they said, but I soon discovered it was a cracked version. No problem, I became Microsoft partner last month and have a license key for my windows7 Ultimate. I did an update of the system to the downloaded windows7 software because I want to keep my installed programs of course, but when I try to activate, windows7 forgets the activation on a restart...

So what I do is, I activate windows online with the key, it says the activation is OK, in the system window it shows the genuine label, but after a restart it says again to activate: "26 days to activation; Activate Windows now...."

I have read about WPA.dbl and .bak files, but I have no such files in System32...

Is there a way to restore the complete activation system on my windows7? I would rather not do a clean install as I would have to re-install and re-configure all my software...

    Thanks,

    Erwin

    Aaargh,

Called, waited, got someone to talk to me, but he said this is a technical issue and I should contact local technical support here in Brussels, but I tried that already last week and they couldn't help me unless I paid 400 USD for a support ticket...

getting the feeling I will have to do a complete re-installation...

OK – lets get cheeky, then :)

Telephone the Volume Activation Center in Belgium (32) (2) 401 2650

and see if they can/will help.

    OK _ I think I see what’s happening here.
After the restart your system is reverting back to the Default Key for Windows 7 Ultimate – which means that your registry is possibly ‘locked’ and being restored from backup every reboot. (Win 7 no longer uses the ‘antiquated’ WPA files for activation – WGA now works in a very different way)

This could either be malware, misconfiguration, or corruption – or the effects of a Loader that hasn’t been properly removed.

I’d start by doing a malware check – which may also catch any remains of a Loader.
Try using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to clean the system.
Download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (www.malwarebytes.org ). Update it, but do NOT accept the offer of Real-Time protection (it may cause problems).
Run a Full System Scan in your main user account, and Quick scans in any other account.
Delete everything it finds. You may well find that your anti-virus complains a few times during the process – allow that to do its thing at the same time.
I would also suggest running CHKDSK and SFC
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type
    CHKDSK C: /R
    and hit the Enter key
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

run another MGADiag report, and post the results.

Most Non-Genuine issue look the same regardless of the true underlying cause. So to help minimize the confusion caused by troubleshooting multiple different issues, we ask that all users creat their own thread for thier own specific issue.

In other words, please do not post "Me Too" messages in other people's threads.

    Noel,

Sorry for the delay, but was out of the office today...

Just did the checkdisk and the SFC, SFC message was: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    as for the MGADIAG:

The Key here is the Default (Keyless Install) Key for Ultimate – and cannot be activated.

The SLIC table present in the machine is a version appropriate for Vista, not Windows 7.

It seems that somehow, the computer has mislaid your Product Key!

You need to change the Key back to the one that came with your Partner Program  - and you may then need to activate by phone.

  • Hello Noel,

Thanks for the reply, do you mean I need to activate by phone to solve the problem? It is not something I can rectify in the registry or somewhere else?

I can change the key to the one I got with the partner program, but it is lost after a restart...

You may need to – it’s a pretty painless process, especially from a landline.
First change the Key using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page – to the one that you got through the program. It will first attempt to activate over the internet. If that fails, then use telephone activation.

  • Noel,

I tried to activate by phone, but it doesn't work either... After inputting the 9 blocks of 6 numbers, the system says there is an error...

    Erwin

    What error??
In that case phone back, and this time speak to an operator....
    telephone activation.
    Click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI 4
    and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions - but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you.

  • Aaargh,

Called, waited, got someone to talk to me, but he said this is a technical issue and I should contact local technical support here in Brussels, but I tried that already last week and they couldn't help me unless I paid 400 USD for a support ticket...

getting the feeling I will have to do a complete re-installation...

OK – lets get cheeky, then :)

Telephone the Volume Activation Center in Belgium (32) (2) 401 2650

and see if they can/will help.
