Vista product key not accepted by Microsoft Support site RRS feed

  • Question

  • Whilst trying to resolve another issue related to pictures on web pages showing as a red x (for one acount on a desktop, but another - but with apparently the same settings) and exhausting all the suggestions on the MS support site, I tried to send an e-mail but the site rejected the DELL supplied Product ID.  Having seen a request to copy the diagnostics in the post - here it is:

  • Unfortunately, I do not believe we can help you with your IE issue or your subsequent issue with submitting a Service Request (note: As I understand it, IE is treated as part of the OS and OEM versions of Windows do not receive free support thru Microsoft. Support for OEM Windows is supported by the computer's manufacturer under their warranty support policies).

For the IE issue, I suggest posting in the Internet Explorer section of the Windows Vista Answers Forum at http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsvista

    Thank you,

  • Windows Product ID: 89578-OEM-7332157-00204

    Hello, Cardiff

The Product ID that you enter when requesting support is not the key or Dell service tag that is located on the computer. Above is the correct Product ID you must use, to obtain this information without running the report, you can go to Start, right click Computer and choose Properties, then scroll to the bottom of the window that comes up and look for Product ID under Windows activation.

  • Hello David,

Thanks for the reply but I should have been more explicit in my post.  I am entering the Windows Product ID.    I tried to put a screen shot here but could not copy it here, having cut & past the above key from the e-mail in to the 'Type the product identification number' field on the Help & Support / Enter your product ID screen.

    The response I get is,

"There was a problem with the product ID. Please re-enter the product ID in the correct format as shown. You may also obtain support by paying with a credit card."

I don't want to pay £46 due to a problem either with Dell or Microsoft, or possibly both!

Please try it for yourself, the relevant details are: O/S Vista Home Premium; Support topic: Internet Explorer ; Sub-topic: An earlier version of IE (actually 7); Product ID: as above.

    Thanks.
