How to handle a fund liquidation and reinvestment RRS feed

  • Question

  • One of my investment funds is shortly to be liquidated, and the funds re-invested into a different fund.

How can I handle this in MS Money?

If I input a sale of the old funds, and purchase of new funds, I will have false capital gains reports.

Could I record it as a split, then rename the fund? Or is there a better way?

  • If this is truely an involuntary tax free operation, yes, remove the symbol, rename the fund, do an appropriate split, and then put in the symbol for the new fund. Sometimes people think that an "exchange" within a fund family, where there is a commisson-free sell and buy, is tax free, and it is not.

The split will need to be entered as a ratio of 16-bit integers. Post the ratio you are trying to achieve if you would like to recieve a suitable ratio. You can make notes into the Comments field of the investment Details.
