Live Mesh is intended to be replaced with Live Sync in Wave 4

General discussion
-
I was looking at some comments on the leaked beta for Windows Live Wave 4 -- it seems that there is no mention of 'Mesh', however mentions only of 'Sync'...
I'm hoping there isn't and migration requirements for 'Live Sync' -- and that Mesh/Sync is kept very similar to what it is... Although I'd happily undertake the transition assuming performance is improved.
Any comments from the Live Mesh team?

we don't know the answer to this, but the rumors do seem to indicate the the merger of Live Mesh and Live Sync will happen and it will be called Sync. I've seen the same leaked information.

Hi Stephen
Thanks for your reply -- wasn't looking for an answer per se; merely prompting discussion :)
Hopefully this leaked information can shine some hope into the future of Mesh. Some interesting things I've... err.. read;
-
Installing Live Sync Beta affects the Mesh client
-
"C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mesh" is now present
Files within indicate the following (such as 'CollectSyncLogs.bat'); with commented updates, pointing to Wave 4 Milestone 1.-
REM CollectSyncLogs.bat
REM Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
REM 03/21/2008 - Created for Live Mesh.
REM 07/07/2008 - Accept command line arguments.
REM 10/22/2008 - Update for Live Framework Client.
REM 07/27/2009 - Update for Wave 4 M1.
Finally, the MOE.exe present, in the noted folder above, contains the following meta-data;-
Product Name: Windows Live Sync
File Description: Mesh Operating Environment File Version: 0.9.4910.15
This may confirm some rumours :)
Hopefully we can get a hold of the next version of Mesh public beta soon... I want to try it out!

I am starting to become a little concerned that Live Mesh was going to be axed. I think if Microsoft were to combine the features of the available MS sync apps, it would be awesome. For instance, if Mesh had the same ability to edit MS documents in the web browser like you can in Skydrive that would be golden! Also, if you were able to have additional storage space like in Skydrive that would be great... and if Mesh were better integrated with MS Office like "Live Workspaces" are now, Sweet!
I'm just sayin'

Hello, I've read in some blogs about people having issues with Remote Desktop (and Mesh at all) upon WLE Wave 4 installation... is that true? Anybody can confirm this?Tuesday, March 23, 2010 10:01 PM

I've had issues with the Remote Desktop for about a month now; but nothing directly correlated with an installation of the Wave 4 beta?
You might be interested to know, that it seems the Remote Desktop component of Mesh has been coupled alongside the Mesh/Sync merge. The files are definitely present for such functionality...
I'm still experimenting with putting the Wave 4 executable over an original Mesh install to try and see some changes :P

ShadowXVII | http://www.shadowsplace.netOk then, I was so curious I gave Wave 4 a "test ride"... Live Mesh's Live Desktop's gone. :(
The icon in the tray says I'm online and connected to my Mesh, but even on the very same computer I get "PC XX: Online, Live Mesh Remote Desktop is not available". Will I solve that just uninstalling WLE Wave4? I do prefer having my PC anywhere that some eyecandy for Messenger! And I did some copy/paste here and there to try and get latest Mesh (in Program files\Windows Live\Mesh) run in place of the actual version but until now I only got errors when MOE starts up. :(

Oh, sorry, I should have clarified my statement some more.
The actual install (the leaked Wave 4 Beta) does not 'upgrade' Live Mesh itself. However, it does install similar files, but in a different location and with directory structure changes.
The front-end of the Wave 4, Live Sync Beta (when it's run), asks for a Live username and password that has been 'authorized' by Microsoft. Essentially, Live Sync Beta is probably the only component of the beta (AFAIK), that is still 'protected', and not yet currently patched by the public for non-Microsoft users. Currently, an internal authentication is required in order to sign into the Live Sync Beta in Wave 4.

I thought that already... gonna have to wait for public release of Wave4, thanks for your kindness. I know I'm not entitled to that yet you didn't scold me... nice, did appreciate that! ;)Wednesday, March 24, 2010 8:41 AM -
Hehe, I'm not entitled either -- so we're in the same boat ;)

BTW, couldn't quite understand if you get "normal" (not WLE Wave4 version) Mesh to work together with WLE Wave4. Remote Desktop, at least... I'm forced to use TeamV****r (don't want to spam) but I'd really like to have Mesh back... especially as I read about Windows 7 SP1's feature of GPU-accelerated remote desktop and I do hope Mesh will support that from the very start!

Well that's what was interesting... I tried copying the MOE.exe and relevant files over the top of a public Mesh installation -- that didn't quite work (as expected) -- too much has changed internally since the last release of Mesh, which causes errors (as per the logs it produces).
On the other hand, the remote desktop executable that runs in the background, can be run OOBE, and initially connected too, however I only receive a blank screen -- whether that is a bug or just an incompatibility, I'm not sure. I am still experimenting with it though and will let you know if I find anything interesting ;)

ShadowXVII | http://www.shadowsplace.netThanks, please keep us (or me, at least! XD ) posted here. I tried your first attempt yesterday, simply overwrote files in original Mesh folder (in "Documents and Settings\...") with files in Program Files\Windows Live\Mesh but did crash simply logging into Mesh: lucky me I had a backup of Mesh folder.
I saw MOE.exe gets to start if you just doubleclick it but moemonitor.exe doesn't get it and tries to open another Moe.exe (stock one): we should link moemonitor to the new moe, somehow. :(

Neat ;)
So you wouldn't happen to get a Microsoft DOMAIN\Username that will work on the Dogfood beta? I'm super eager to see the changes -- :P

Just to note that when I peeked at the leak, I did not run the Wave4 Mesh/Sync bits, though they installed, as you noted. The existing Live Sync released version and Mesh beta (current) continues to work, including remote desktop (launched from the Live Mesh notifier).

Note that the 5 Gb limit is for transferring to the Live Desktop. You are not limited to this with P2P sync.-steve

Then perhaps you can explain to me how this, p2p sync, is done between a mac and a windows machine?Wednesday, March 31, 2010 11:09 PM -
I don't have a Mac in my Mesh, so I cannot tell you from experience, but if a folder is in your Mesh, you go to www.mesh.com, sign in, and change the sync settings for the folder to not sync with the Live Desktop. The folder still appears on the desktop, but it is only a placeholder for settings. There will be no files in it and data will only sync P2P between devices. That should work for all devices in your Mesh - PC or Mac.
I believe that you can also do this when you first add a folder to the Mesh - select properties on the PC where you add the folder and change the settings in there to not sync with the Live Desktop and enable the Sync to the devices of your choice in the list.

Your suggestion isn't working. Every time I try to change the sync settings on live desktop it changes the settings on my imac, not on the live desktop. Then when I change them back it adds another sync folder on my regular desktop. This program should not be this difficult to use, I feel like I've wasted way too much time already, I could have used a thumb drive around 1000 times at this point.
Why have they made live sync inoperable on a mac if this program still doesn't work?

Actually, you raise an interesting point here -- with the release of Live Mesh as Live Sync, and subsequent coupling with Windows Live, does that mean support for Mac has maybe been deprecated?
Unless of course, a new version of MSN Messenger (and Windows Live suite) is coming to Mac -- but I doubt it.
Also, in regards to the sync settings -- I just set (on one of the p2p computers), not to sync with Live Desktop (and the changes propagate). I can't vouch for the same in Live Mesh on Mac, but it shouldn't be 'refusing' like it is.

After searching through help again I found that p2p for a mac is not an option.
"Currently, peer-to-peer synchronization is available for Windows PCs only. This means you must always sync a folder with your Live Desktop to keep it synchronizing with your Mac. If you stop synchronizing a folder with your Live Desktop, that folder will continue to sync with other Windows PCs in your mesh, according to your synchronization settings, but files in the folder will no longer sync with your Mac."

I'm back to trying live sync, since live mesh does not sync macs, and I still cannot get it to work. I've been using it for several years and a month or two ago it just stopped working. When I open it on my imac the two arrows appear in my toolbar for around 5 seconds and then disappear. Any suggestions? I've reinstalled it around 18 times btw...Wednesday, April 21, 2010 10:48 PM

I have absolutely zero experience with Live Sync (or Live Mesh) on the Mac. The best that I can suggest is going to the Live Sync section of Windows Live Help - the forums where Support for Windows Live products and services monitor and respond as needed - http://windowslivehelp.com/product.aspx?productid=24-steve
