Activity Feeds Error on UR12 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there all, I hope this is something simple but...

I have recently re-built my core CRM demo image, this is ON-PREMISE. Installed from UR6 slipstream media, then updated to UR12 using Windows Update.

I then downloaded the Activity Feeds solution from the Market Place, version 1.0.1.20302

It installs correctly, and after a single JavaScript error I managed to get the Activity Feeds Configuration rule applied for Account (which then creates the user one automatically)

Then when I visit the "What's New" wall it doesn't appear and I just get the spinning green circle thing.

Apparently there are product updates in UR12 that update the Activity Feeds solution past the version number above (found this on another on-premise build that had activity feeds applied BEFORE UR12 was applied)

So does anyone know where the download link is to the latest version I can download and install ?

  • Managed to find a solution straight after posting this... The deal is if you are on-premise and have applied UR12 without having Activity Feeds already deployed to all your tenancies of CRM, or if you are now on UR12 and decide to create a new tenancy of CRM you will have to:

    1. Download and install the version of Activity Feeds on the Microsoft Marketplace / Pinpoint (version 1.0.1.20302)
    2. Download and run the UR12 Server update from the Microsoft download site on the CRM server, you only need to get as far as the extraction complete / welcome screen not all the way through.
    3. Use windows explorer to look through your hidden temp files for *activityfeed* and it will come up with a couple of CAB files ('ActivityFeeds_1.0.1.CAB' and 'ActivityFeeds.CAB')
    4. Import the 'ActivityFeeds.cab' as a solution and it should tell you that this will update the one that is already there. The version number of this new one should be indicated as 1.0.3.21214
    5. Make sure that you overwrite existing customisations (best to test this in a dev environment before doing this on any form of live solution as you can overwrite changes you have made elsewhere with this!)

When you publish the changes through this should have upgraded you to the actual latest version. Why MS don't have a new version of the solution available on PinPoint I have absolutely no idea. Surely I cant have  been the first person to create a new instance of CRM since UR12 ?

  • I've just applied Update Rollup 13 onto a development box and tested the extraction of the Activity Feeds solution files during the UR installation process. Searching for *activityfeeds* after launching the installer actually gives me four results now:

    ActivityFeeds_1.0.1.cab
    1.0.1.20302

    ActivityFeeds.cab
    1.0.3.21214

    ActivityFeedsCore_1.0.4.zip
    1.0.4.3236

    ActivityFeeds_Managed.zip
    1.0.5.3448

The first one is the "classic" version available from Dynamics Marketplace / Pinpoint, which will not work after UR12 has been deployed. The second one (1.0.3.21214) is the file you should use for installing Activity Feeds on an organization that didn't have the solution while you updated the server to UR12 or UR13.

The last two files with the higher version numbers (1.0.4.3236 and 1.0.5.3448) seem to be the solution files intended for CRM Online. Importing them onto an on-premises CRM does technically work, but what you end up with is a second solution called ActivityFeedsCore installed alongside the previous ActivityFeeds solution. The newer solutions change the wall component backgrounds from grey to white (to match the Polaris UI) and introduce a couple of new "enable/disable for Yammer" buttons on the Post Rule Configurations entity ribbon.

In case anyone's wondering, no, you can't enable the Yammer integration for an on-premises environment just by applying these newer versions of the Activity Feeds solution.

  • Thanks for posting the steps on how to acquire the new Activity Feeds solution file. For the past couple of months I've been checking the Dynamics Marketplace every now and then to see if Microsoft would have posted an updated version of the solution there. Ever since the details of the upgrade process for Activity Feeds with Update Rollup 12 were released (only in the form of a YouTube video, as far as I know), I've been wondering how and when this obvious gap in the process would be plugged.

Perhaps the current situation just reveals a couple of dirty little secrets: how few organizations are actually leveraging the Activity Feeds solution and also how many are holding off from deploying Update Rollup 12 until the initial bugs from the cross-browser support roll-out have been ironed out.

  • Thank you for the further information here Jukka, yes I think most of the enterprise on-premise customers stayed on UR11 so they didn't have to pile through miles of JScript form code after the UR12 Object Model changes. I am sure this will all be useful information for customers as they slowly move up the UR ladder. So glad for Windows 2012 Server support in UR13!

  • Thank you so much for a solution to a problem that had really been annoying me for the past months.

Coming from SFDC environment and being used to Chatter I really want to try out Acitivity Feeds and see what my focus group thinks

    A Little tip:

Instead, just run the downloaded UR packache with /extract:<path>, for example I created C:\Temp\CRM and called the package like this:

    CRM2011-Server-KB2791312-ENU-amd64.exe /extract:C:\temp\crm

I found the file needed in as c:\Temp\CRM\Actions_Org\Install\Solutions\ActivityFeeds.cab

Unfortunately the configuration menu in Settings and "What's New" were missing (I think it weas because I selected to override customizations??) so I had to manually delete record walls and delete SDK Message Processing Steps before I could uninstall the solution.

After reinstalling all now works, even in Chrome and FireFox :D Nice! All that is left for me is now to re-create the record wall on cases and accounts (<del>I have a 2nd custom form so it can not be done automatically</del>).

Update: Actually the new version creates the record wall even when you have more than 1 form. Nice :)

    Thank you again.

  • I've installed de UR13 on the CRM server and extracted CRM2011-Server-KB2791312-NLD-amd64.exe

As you mentioned I can find the activityfeed.CAB file there.

However when I try to import the solution I get a error that my CRM version(5.0.9690.3448 Onpremise) is higher than the version of the solution file (5.0.9690.3000 Onpremise)

I'm guessing this version is the UR12 version but how do I get it working with UR13? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

I've just installed my prod server with UR13, and imported the file from UR12 without any problems.

What error do you get? Always post details, it makes it easier to help.

  • When I import the solution activityfees.cab located in the UR13 I get the following error(translated to english from dutch):

The solution you try to import is generated with a previous version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Minimum supported version: 5.09690.3000 OnPremise, System version: 5.0.9690.3448 OnPremise, databaseversion 5.0.9688.583

I have the same problem. Any luck with this? And I have UR12. What is weird though I succeed to update Activity Feeds in one organization, but in different organization, also with UR12 can't.
