"Windows Vista Home Premium product key is invalid" For Gateway RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I've had this computer for almost 4 and a half years and never had a problem with it until this message comes up.....Do I need to take it in for repair? I haven't deleted anything from the hard drive except for MyspaceIM and GoogleEarth. And I haven't added anything recently (in months). HELP!!! There's no reduced functionality (not even an option). I choose activate later and the only thing different is my background with the message "This copy of Windows is not genuine."
When I startup the computer, I only get two choices:
    Activate now
    Activate later
Then upon resume, it gave me three choices:
    Buy new product key
Type in a different product key
Contact Gateway to help resolve this problem
This very frustrating and I'm not a big techie (I know a little bit) so please explain things somewhat simply and concisely.  Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Your License is showing as being invalid - but I can see no reason for it. This usually means that the Licensing Store is corrupted.

Please try the below steps to recreate the Store files.  This may resolve the issue.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

     Reboot

Once complete, please post back with a new MGADiag report

  • Before I do this will I lose any of my files that are currently housed on my computer?

No - it doesn't touch user files.
