Unauthorized change RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello my name is Cris.  My computer says:

    "Windows Activation
An unauthorized change was made to Windows.

    Error: 0xC004D401
    Description:
The security processor reported a system file mismatch error."

It will NOT let me get to the Control Panel.  The window pops up for a half-second then disappears.  At random times it goes to the blue screen and then restarts itself.  I have only had the computer for a little over a month, with no previous issues.

I have seen the two common responses to this, the System Restore and System Scan.  Here are my results:

System Restore, in Safe Mode (since I cannot access it in Regular Mode):
"No Restore Points have been created on your computer's system disk.  To create a restore point open System Protection".
    System Scan
    "Verification 100% Complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir/Logs/CBS/CBS.log.  For example C:Windows/Logs/CBS/CBS.log"

    Any other suggestions?
If I have to re-install Vista, my complaints are:
1: It's inconvenient, having to re-install programs like Office, etc.
2: I have no disks.  My Vista was built in to the computer.  (My HP does give me the option of re-installing though, so that's good)
3: Will a re-install really work, or will the problem continue?  Will it validate after the re-install?

    Thanks, Cris.

  • Darin,

Thanks for the reply.  I did reinstall Vista after all.  It was a pain, since (with Office ) I have over 500 megs of Updates to do.  But then I was able to Validate.  During the Update procedures, I noticed that it was indeed creating restore points.  Then, I got more blue screens!!  I was then worried that one of the Updates was conflicting with something on my computer, but I only had my Norton 360, iTunes, and Office 2007 installed.  I called HP Support, since the computer is only 1 month old.  They had me run diagnostics, and we found out that my RAM is bad, and I need to ship them my computer.  At least they will pay for the shipping and repairs because of the warranty.  I asked the Tech guy, and he said all my issues are indeed because of the bad RAM.  I didn't tell him of the Validation issue, because I never got to it.

So, now I am hoping that when my computer returns in a couple weeks, that it works.

Darin, do you think bad RAM had some sort of effect on my software or updates, that would cause the computer to lose it's Validation, and give me blue screens (with all sorts of errors that I couldn't read, it went by fast).

Thanks again for the help, Cris.

  • Hi Cris,

Two things bother me about this issue:

    1) No restore point available - Vista creates System Restore point for almost anything (before a Windows Update, before most software installs and so on) so to not have any Restore Points available suggests a Malware infection. I say that because there are a number of Malwares that disable the ability to create System Restore points and then deletes all the saved Restore Points.  So unless you (another user of the computer) manually turned off Vista ability to create Restore Points, then the only other cause,(that I can think of) would be Malware did it.

    2) "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." - This tells me there is damage to your Vista install. How the damage occured, I don't know (I suspect it may have to do with #1 above).  This also tells me that Vista can not repair the damage, itself.

Because you have already tried the fixes (that I would have suggested for this issue) and they did not resolve the issue, as well as, the two points above, I would have recommend reinstalling Vista.

After reinstall, your Vista should Validate fine. I don't forsee this happening again, but there is always a chance if something starts damaging Vista's files again.

Sorry I couldn't be more help,

  • Hello C and A,

Defective RAM can wreak havoc on a Windows installation.  The RAM did not directly cause Vista to lose its validation, but the defective RAM did have an effect on one the major system files that has to be 100% right for the Vista Secure software platform to work correctly.

Note in the mgadiag report that it was telling us that one of Vista's critical files had a security mismatch:
    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\secur32.dll[6.0.6001.18272
    ]

This line in the first section of the report is telling us that Vista detected an in-memory discrepancy that it interpreted as a tampering attempt:
    TTS Error: M:20090822154515655-

As it turned out, the discrepancy was ultimately due to defective RAM.

  • Actually, the line:

      Cached Validation Code: N/A, hr = 0xc004d401

Indicated the file discrepancy in system memory (known as an 'In Memory' Mod-Auth Tamper)
The File Mismatch indicates an file discrepancy on the Hard Drive (known as an 'On Disk' Mod-Auth Tamper)

The 'In Memory' Mod-Auth can Definitely be caused by bad RAM because when a file is running in System Memory it is running in the RAM and if the RAM is malfunctioning, the file (that is running in the RAM) could become corrupt.  When the file becomes corrupt, it no longer 'Looks' like what Vista thinks it should look like and thinks it's securety is being attacked.  Vista's responce to this type of "attak" is to go into a Non-Genuine state

An 'On Disk' Mod-Auth would usually not be directly caused by bad RAM, but I suppose it's possible that if the file was messed up while running RAM and the (for whatever reason) was saved to the Hard Drive, the file would still not 'look' like Vista thinks it should and would again think it's being attacked and again trigger the Non-Genuine state.

Having an 'On Disk' and an 'In Memory' Mod-Auth tamper at the same time is very unusual, so I can't be sure that your issue happened exactly as I describe, but when you have hardware that isn't working right, unusual things do tend to happen.

I am confident that once the RAM is replaced, your issue should be resolved.  But if it's not, come back to this forum, create a new Thread and post an updated Diagnostic Report and we'll see what the matter is.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • My computer came back from HP, and they replaced 1 gig of my 6 gig RAM.  I have been able to Validate, and things look like they are back to normal.

Thanks for all the help, Cris.
