Product key blocked from use by Microsoft :( RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased Windows 7 Ultimate in January 2010 and everything worked just fine (installation, activation, validation, etc). When I set up my computer first time I remember there was a message at some point saying that my Win7 license would be locked for use only on this computer (or something like that).

After working just fine for half a year, my harddisk crashed just recently and I had to get a new one. When I reinstalled Win7 on the new harddisk (all other components the same), I couldn't activate it.

It says the product key is blocked by Microsoft. I retyped the key to make sure it was typed correctly, but no luck. I tried activating by phone but it didn't work either.

Then I read at this forum that blocked keys are not genuine. However I did the genuine test at microsoft.com/genuine, as advised by the automated phone activation. It passed the test, meaning it's genuine so I don't understand why it won't activate. Is it because it's locked to my old broken harddisk which it was previously installed on?

Thanks for any help. I'll post the data from that MGADIAG tool aswell:

Unfortunately, the product key used to install your copy of Windows 7 Ultimate is a "not-for-resale" MSDN Subscription product key.  Because it was discovered to have been illegally sold, it is no longer genuine and can no longer be used.  In order to rectify your issue, please visit   Genuine Microsoft Advantage  and click on Validate Windows.  After validation fails, click on the Get Genuine to learn how to acquire a WGA Kit.

Just an FYI........When an installation of Windows 7 is in the initial grace period, it will always validate as Genuine when you go to  www.microsoft.com/genuine and click Validate Windows.

I know, I know, that's pretty stupid, but don't look at me I didn't set it up that way.

  • Not sure if this thread is still alive but, I believe I too was a victim of the MSDN licensing issues and my copy of Win 7 pro is now supposedly not genuine.  Can someone look at this or tell me how to get a legitimate answer from Microsoft so I can take that to Ebay and report this person as selling illegal items:

Please repost your report to your OWN NEW thread - this avoids confusion for all.

    Having said that....
Your Key is from a not-for-resale MSDN account. You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key.(all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window. or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

Please read the following stickies.... .......

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.
