windows security center error - Vista / OneCare 2.5.2900.22 RRS feed

  • Question

  • After adding more memory to my computer from 4gigs to 8gigs.  Windows security center is showing that windows live one care fire wall and malware protection is not working.  It is in the red.  But the live one care icon is still green!  So I'm not sure if one care is actually working or not.  It apeers and looks like it is.  I have tried all of the suggestions on reseting the wmi and it doesn't work.  I believe that this is a memory issue between windows security center and windows live one care.  I have windows vista ultimate srv.1 64 bit.  So the extra memory should not be an issue.  Is there an update for this problem?

    Thanks

  •  I received a response from Microsoft and the cause of the problem has been identified. They are working on a fix. I don't know when the fix will be available.

The cause is a "race" condition at boot that causes the status from OneCare to not be correctly submitted to the Windows Security Center in many cases. OneCare *is* protecting the PC, but the Security Center is not reflecting the status correctly due to the timing of comunications. The workaround is to open OneCare, click Change Settings, turn off the Firewall, click Apply, turn on the Firewall, click Apply. Then, repeat this for Virus and Spyware protection. This will allow OneCare to correctly submit its status to the Security Center, which will also update the status in Windows Home Server, if you are using it.

  • I don't think adding ram would cause this but since rebuilding the WMI repository did not resolve the issue I suggest contacting support. How to reach support - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecareinstallandactivate/thread/30400b52-7f26-4ba0-bc18-17e305329d90

  • One last thing to try - turn off the protection in OneCare and turn it back on again. Do that for both the firewall and virus/spyware protection. If that doesn't help, please contact support as Jim suggested.

See the solutions offered in the above answers, weblab.
The WMI reset fix is explained here:

    http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/onecarefirewall/thread/c0ca9eb2-14b0-4591-be85-4b7fd1700191/

Also, can you open OneCare and click Help/About and let me know what version you see for OneCare there?

weblab, your English is great. :-)

Hang in there. It may be a bug. I've got a Vista 32 bit PC at home that updated to .22 (same version you show) on Wednesday night and when I rebooted Thursday morning, I had the issue. I have not rebooted since I did the trick of turning off and on OneCare protection.

  • You're welcome. I've notified Microsoft that there may be an issue. Did you get the red Security Center warning in the system tray or do you only see the "off" condition when you open Security Center? Since we know that OneCare *is* working if it is green, you can disable the warnings from the Security Center in the sytem tray. Open the Windows Security Center from Control Panel, and click on "change the way security center alerts me" on the left side of the window. You can turn off the icon warning completely or choose to let it appear red, but no pop-ups will be displayed about the "red" status.

I see only the "off" condition in the Security Center. System Tray alerts i  disabled completely!

  • I've pinned this thread to the top of the forum for now and unmarked it as an answer.
I'm not seeing this on a Vista 64 bit machine, but personally saw it on a 32 bit machine. I have not rebooted the machine since toggling OneCare protection off and back on, which caused the Security Center to go back to green in all areas.

Note that if you are encountering this specific issue, you may not be seeing an alert from the Windows Security Center. There will be no warning in the sytem tray with a red shield from the Security Center. However, you will see the problem if you open the Windows Security Center from Control Panel, where it will report that OneCare and Windows Firewalls are off and that Antivirus and Antispyware are off, yet it will report that signatures are up to date. In my case, the warning came from Windows Home Server alerting me as it monitors the Windows Security Center on each connected PC.

The original post in this thread mentions Vista 64 bit and a subsequent post mentions Vista 32 bit. My machine with the issue is Vista 32 bit.

If the information provided by weblab holds true for my case, a reboot will return the red status in the Security Center. I have contacted Microsoft and they are investigating.

As noted earlier in the thread, the common cause of the problem is a corrupt WMI repository, which can be reset to resolve the false warning. Weblab reported that this did not resolve the problem. I'll update this thread as we learn more and after I've had a chance to reboot my machine exhibiting the problem and check my other machines.

  • Thanks for the confirmation, Ronny.
Apparently, this doesn't make a difference anyway. The Security Center will not alert you if you are encountering the problem due to the 2.5.2900.22 OneCare update. You will see the red status warnings only when you open the Windows Security Center, as far as I know. If you are using Windows Home Server, it will alert you based on the information from the Security Center on each monitored PC.

  • Stephen,

Exactly, .22 was installed and Windows Home Server started giving false Network Critial alarms over Clients with WLOC not having firewall or antiapyware.

Solution (so far was to use WLOC to turn off and back on Firewall and AV/Spyware. Problems seems to go away.

i come form germany, and I have the same problem with the onecare update to 2.5.2900.22.
My Homeserver-Console alert me all 10 seconds about missing firewall and spyware ...   :-(

I have at the homeserver click on "ignore this problem" but by a restart of the pc comes the same error.
    Saturday, March 21, 2009 4:58 PM
  • Yes, the issue returns after a restart.

I tried both the uninstall WLOC / reinstall method and the WMI suggestion and non yield any permanent fix.

Both PC's are running Vista 32-bit with SP1 and fully up to date.

  • Stopping in quickly to let everyone know that I have not received any news on the status of this problem. I don't expect to hear anything until next week at the earliest, unfortunately.
I am hopeful that we can at least learn the cause and if an update to fix it will be needed or if it can be dealt with in any other way. For now, if you are using Windows Home Server, you'll need to either set the Connector to not display network health warnings or click "ignore this issue" in the WHS console when you get alerted after a reboot.

  • Thanks for the assistance. My new Dell Inspirion (64 bit) running Vista Home Premium (SP1) had the same issue. After resetting the WMI the red shield vanished. However, the security alert center still showed red Firewall and Virus issue until I turned off and on in One Care as noted in your response above. All "green" now.

Unfortunately I found that I can't share the printer now as One Care does not support 32 bit and 64bit machines on the same network. Any thoughts ? Thanks

Share the printer manually via Windows. You may need to provide a driver to the machine that will be accessing the shared printer if that printer is installed on the other machine and Windows doesn't have access to a driver.
Control Panel / Printers / Add printer on the machine that needs to access the shared printer after you have set the printer to be shared on the other PC (Printers/Right Click - Properties/Sharing tab)

You may need to allow sharing in the OneCare firewall on one or both machines, particularly if the network is wired//wireless mixed.

Open OneCare on each of the computers.

    Click Change Settings

On the firewall tab, click configure firewall

If the network is shown as Public, click Change Location to change it to "Home or Work."

    Click the Advanced Settings button

    Click Network connections tab.

If there are multiple active connections shown, you may need to disable the extras in your Windows network connections settings. (Network and Sharing Center, manage connections, in Vista; Right click My Network Places and select Properties on the Start menu in XP)

On the Ports and Protocols tab, add a check mark next to File and Printer Sharing - for subnet and Internet if the first setting alone (after all of the above are verified) does not allow Sharing to work.

If all of the above fail, please contact support.

  • Here's an addition to this problem that I haven't seen yet. I run with the modem unplugged the majority of the time.
I have this problem of the security center alerting me the firewall and anti virus are non-existent also.

I did a reboot, and the security center red shield disappeared.

I plugged the modem in after several hours off line. And the red shield popped right up, and nothing makes it go away.

  • Thanks Steven for your support here! After having contacted the customer service I reinstalled OneCare (as they asked me to do). I am now back with the old version .20, and there is no problem with the security centre anymore.

  • I am having the same kind of problem on my vista 64 bit machine. Onecare reports "problems were found on your computer" and has a button to press that will fix the problem(s). The button doesn't do anything.
Windows defender warns me that I have no firewall or antivirus software on my machine.
The so called fix to run winmgmt veriyrepository does not work as the system returns an "access denied" error.
I have removed, cleaned up, repaired, and reinstalled onecare three times now. Each time the installation appears to go well, except of course I have to configure my firewall each time. Upon the following reboot - AFTER the reboot for the installation - the problem appears.
Microsoft/Windows live have totally messed up the hotmail service, and now they have messed up the onecare service.
    Ubuntu looks better and better

  • I just noticed it's Stephen rather than Steven! Apologies!

BTW: I noticed two other strange things.

1 Whenever I do a full scan the number of files that are scanned differs whenever I change my account. For example if I am logged into account A (with full rights) OC will scan 90,000 files, if I am logged into account B (with restricted rights) it's 350,000?

2 Also, the scan often stops at about 50 pc after which a message pops up telling me that everythings is fine with my pc.
    Wednesday, March 25, 2009 2:57 PM
  • Sorry Stephen, that fix doesn't work. Windows Defender still reports no anti-virus software, although onecare is showing a "green" status.

When will microsoft learn to stop putting out fixes for things that work, and leaving us with broken applications??? These are MICROSOFT applications for goodness sake!!!

I've abandoned Internet Explorer, hotmail, livemail, office.... now in the process of abandoning windows altogether and moving to Ubuntu... doesn't microsoft care about it's long suffering, long ignored, and PAYING customers?????

It appears that the .22 release may have been pulled, if a reinstall netted you with .20. As far as I know a fixed update will be released soon after it is finished being tested.

First of all, Defender needs to be turned off if you are using OneCare.
If OneCare is in green status, then you are dealing with the known issue reported in this thread. Ignore the security center warning and await the update. Manually turning off protection from wthin OneCare and back on again will cause the security center warning to go away until you reboot. You will need to await the fixed update for OneCare for this problem to go away as you cannot resolve it permanently.
If you are not having the known issue, but have a corrupted WMI database, the command window needs to be run with admin privileges or it will fail as you described. Type command in the Vista search box and right click Command.exe in the results list and select "Run as Administrator" to launch it. Then enter the commands.
The problem with the Fix It button not working is unrelated to the Security Center issue:

Fix It doesn't work - try the database reset tool - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4bc2594b-95ab-4235-b5b8-41656b38480f&DisplayLang=en

I can't speak to the Hotmail service, except to say that I disagree, but understand that many people are unhappy with the changes made to it. As for the OneCare service, yes, it was clearly a bug released to production, unfortunately, but it will be fixed shortly.

As I replied before, turn *off* Defender. It will conflict with OneCare as OneCare includes the protection of Defender.
The specific problem is communication between Windows Security Center and OneCare. If OneCare is green, you can safely ignore the Security Center warning for now.

No need to apologize. I confuse things by signing "steve" for my posts. I answer to both and don't mind the spelling "steven" vs. "stephen." :-)

If the scan is completing without an error, Id ignore the progress indicator or the file count. A full scan is a full scan. It would appear that the count is wrong. It sounds like a bug, but I'd consider it non-critical.

Understood and you're welcome. :-) An odd count of files or a progress indicator being odd don't typically indacte an infection. It pays to be aware, though.

  • I have had much the same issue that is under discussion here, but raised under a different thread. Please find pasted below 2 emails sent to me during communication with Microsoft Tech Support, hope this helps.
NB if you use the workaround you need to run services.msc as an adminstrator in Vista.

Dated 25 March. Dear David, Thank you for your reply and for providing the information. I appreciate your time and efforts on this issue. I understand that the issue still persists after reinstalling Windows Live OneCare. This is a known issue, currently our product team is working on it. Please assure that a fix to this issue will be released soon. At this time, we have a workaround. Please refer to the following steps. 1.   Click Start, type “services.msc” in the "Start Search" box and press Enter.      2.   Double click the “Security Center” service  3.   Change Startup Type from ”Automatic (Delayed Start)” to “Automatic”  4.   Click OK, close Services window, and restart the computer. If any error occurs during the above steps, please capture a screenshot and send to me.

Dated 26 March. Dear David,  Thank you for writing back to me. I am glad to hear that the issue was resolved by the workaround. Our product team has released a hotfix. The OneCare client will upgrade itself. I believe the users who encountered this issue will get it fix within one or two days. I would appreciate if you update the information on the forum. Thank you again for your time and efforts.

  • Happy to report that .24 autoinstalled on 2 machines this morning and seems to have fixed the problem. So now Windows Home Server is happy too.

  • Perhaps uninstalling and reinstalling One Care will resolve the issue as it did for hbillhas above.
    Jim

I've uninstalled OneCare completely and used the cleanup tool to remove any remaining traces of it. (I have rebooted copiously during this process.)

Upon reinstalling OneCare, the problem (WSC showing red status for both Firewall and Malware Protection, while OneCare itself reports green) returned overnight when OneCare updated itself to 2.5.2900.24.

  • Jason T. if you have the problem with .24, then you probably have a corrupt WMI repository.

  • I too have a red button that says my subscription has expired and my back up does not work, yet my subscription does not expire unitl September. I have a Vista 64 bit. My boot disk failed and I had to re-boot it. After Live OneCare did a tune up, I got the message that my backup would not work because my subscription has expired, which is untrue.

Should I re-install it or what.

Also, if you are phasing out Live OneCare, should I be looking for another virus protection. I need one now and I cannot afford not to be without one. I don't know if I'm protected or not.

    Thank you.

  • I have had Live OneCare for at least 2 years and I have never been offered an OneCare update. Is it just me or are there no updates for a Vista 64 bit computer? I know there are many programs that just don't work on a Vista 64 bit computer. Bummer!!!!

If your subscription to OneCare shows incorrect or expired in OneCare

    • Check your PC date and time. If it is incorrect, change it and restart the computer.
    • Check your subscription status by logging in with your subscription LiveID at http://billing.microsoft.com
    • Confirm that this is the same LiveID shown to be the Subscription ID in OneCare - Help/About…
    • Open OneCare and click "Check for Updates" to have OneCare check for updated credentials

If your subscription is correctly shown at the Billing site, but incorrect in OneCare and your PC date and time are correct, please contact support.

As I noted in my other reply, you need to have the disk problem investigated.

If OneCare is in green status, your OneCare is up to date.

It updates in the background. Some updates require the PC to be rebooted, but these updates only happen a few times per year.

OneCare is fully supported on Vista x64.

  • I fixed this problem. All I did was uninstall Live OneCare and re-install it. But you MUST use the clean-up tool. I learned that Live OneCare will not work right if you don't clean it up. My protection is working just fine now. No erros and my light is green again.

If it doesn't work, try uinstalling and re-installing-----it USUALLY fixes the problems!

  • I have this issue on my desktop Vista Ultimate 64 bit and on my laptop with Vista Ultimate 32 bit.

I have done the wmi fix.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Live OneCare with using the clean up tool.

I have tried turning firewall and AV off and back on.

Still having the issue on both machines.

You have a different problem that cropped up last week. The solution is contained in this thread:

If your OneCare status is red (Red Circle with "1" in it vs. a Red Shield with a white "x" in it), please contact support.
