Restore backup from old computer to new RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have files from my old computer backed up in windows live, when I go to restore them it wants to put them on d: drive of my new laptop.  It is a small restricted drive and I do not want them there, is ther a way to get the files on a drive of my choosing?

    Thanks

  • Sadly, if the files were backed up from D:\ on the other PC, they need to be restored to D:\ on the new PC. The only way this can be avoided is if the D:\ drive didn't exist at all on the new PC. You can't specify the destination for a restore, unfortunately.

You can manually extract the files from the backup zip files, but large files will need to be rejoined.

If your %System% drive is C:\ perhaps you can use Disk Management - Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management - to change the drive letter of D:\ to something else on the laptop, say Z:\, temporarily which may allow OneCare to prompt you for an alternate location to restore to.
