Not Genuine Windows Error message - update installation failed: Error information - 0xC8000247 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've been following some of the different posts here.  I've been able to run the Intel Driver Update Utility, but I cannot run a Windows update, nor update Microsoft Security Essentials.

I'd happily list my mgad results, but I don't know how to do so.  Any google query I've made on the topic leads me here.

Some background:  I have a Dell XPS that's four years old.  Windows 7 home premium 64 bit was pre-installed when I ordered it.  My hard drive became faulty, so I purchased and installed a new drive and transferred my files by way of an image scan.  This is when I began getting the Non Genuine error messages.  It was suggested to me that the easiest thing to do would be to upgrade to Windows 8, I instead purchased a copy of Windows 7 and tried to run a repair, which failed or was just simply ineffective.  I consider myself to be quite the neophyte with most things computer related, so not wanting to risk anything by attempting a clean install and having to potentially re-install programs and re-update drivers I went searching for an easier method.  It was suggested to me that I enter the command prompt and just enter my new Windows 7 license.  This appeared to do the trick at first, as I was able to update security essentials, but the error messages continued and for whatever reason I can no longer update MSE.  This is when I started reading this forum.  The first couple of times I tried to install the Intel Utility it would just lock up and I had to use the task manager to end the process, but for some reason I finally got it to work.  I then tried changing the settings on my update to never - restarted - then reset it to automatic updates, but it does nothing when I click on it.  I've also tried re-installing the Genuine Windows validation, but that still fails.

Any suggestions?  I'd greatly appreciate any help.  As far as I know I now have two genuine copies of Windows 7, but I can't for the life of me get either one validated.

  • MGA Diagnostic Report is Required:

To properly analyze and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the diagnostic report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

    Once downloaded, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, after a short time, the Continue button will change to a Copy button.
Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your post.

  • If KB3004394 is installed - uninstall it.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers

try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

  • Windows is now able to update.  I'll wait a few hours and see if the error message re-appears.  I'll report back later with results either way.  Thanks for the help.

Edit:  It's been almost 20 hours and I haven't had any genuine windows warnings.  Typically I'd get them every few hours.  I'd say problem is solved.  My thanks to Carey and Noel for their help.
